The second round games in the Regan’s sponsored Roscommon and District League Challenge Cup took centre stage on Sunday. There were six teams in action.

Division Two side Brazukas caused the upset of the round when they beat Dysart 2-0 at Lecarrow. Dysart, who are second in Division One, were a goal behind after only 12 minutes when Eduardo scored for the free-scoring Brazilians. Then Marcos sealed the win with an injury time goal. They have a home game against Premier Division side Glen Celtic in the next round.

In an all-Premier Division clash at Castlerea, Shiven Rovers beat a young Castlerea Celtic side 5-1. The home side’s cause was not helped when they had a player sent off early in the game for two bookable offences and they soon found themselves 3-0 down.

Eric Walsh scored two and Laurence Kenny added Shiven Rovers’ third. Martin Foster pulled a goal back for Castlerea Celtic from the penalty spot after Ronan Curran was fouled. However, Francis Kilcommins and Paul Ruane added two more goals for the winners before the end of the game.

Premier Division side Roscommon AFC recorded a comfortable 2-0 win against Division One side Loughglynn United at Lecarrow. Paul Allen and Alan Vogt were their side’s goal scorers. Shiven Rovers are away to Roscommon AFC in the next round

In the Norio’s sponsored Premier Division, Ballinasloe Town went three points clear at the top of the table following their 5-0 win over Cloonfad United at Cloonfad. There were no goals in the first 15 minutes but Ballinasloe Town scored all five of their goals in the next 15 minutes. David Cullen scored two goals, and Alan Duffy, Shane Tracy and Michael Greaney added one each for the winners.

Moore United picked up three valuable points in their bid to avoid relegation when they beat a good Ballaghaderreen side in an eight-goal thriller at Moore. The home side raced into a two-goal lead thanks to Andy Nevin and Kevin Kenny. However, Danny Browne and Shane Duffy brought the sides level at half time.

Andy Nevin restored Moore’s lead before Danny Browne struck again for Ballaghaderreen. In the closing stages of the game Andy Nevin completed his hat-trick. Kevin Kenny added his second to give Moore a 5-3 success.

Kilkerrin United took a major step towards winning the Killeen’s Sports Fields Division One League when they beat third-placed Strokestown United 2-1 at Kilkerrin. A single point from their two remaining games will secure the title. A stunning volley from over 30 meters by Declan Murphy gave Kilkerrin United a 1-0 lead with 21 minutes played.

Ten minutes later, Darragh Geraghty score his side’s second goal with a neat piece of football. John Rogers pulled a goal back for Strokestown United early in the second half but Kilkerrin United held out to win all three points.

Rahara Rovers defeated St. John’s Athletic 1-0 at Rahara in a local derby game. The points were of no real value to either side as they are almost certainly free from relegation worries. St. John’s Athletic were reduced to ten men early in the game when Rory Fitzmaurice was sent off. The only goal of the contest was scored from the penalty spot by Barry Nestor with ten minutes remaining.

With Brazukas playing in the cup, Milltown took full advantage and are now three points clear at the top of the Evening Herald sponsored Division Two League following a 2-1 win against KC Celtic at Kilconnell. Tom Wrynne broke the deadlock early in the second half when he scored for Milltown. Kieran Mannion replied for KC Celtic a few minutes later but Tom Wrynne won all three points for Milltown when he scored his second goal of the game.

Fohenagh remain six points behind the leaders in third place but they have two games less played. They ended Cloonfad United’s hopes of promotion when they prevailed 3-0 at Cloonfad. Niall Keighery gave Fohenagh a 2-0 half-time lead and Marcus Devine added a third from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining.

Lough Harps share third place following their 3-0 win against Dunmore Town at Dunmore. Tom Gallagher scored in each half for the Ballinlough-based side and Jarlath Carney added their third in the second half.

Ballaghaderreen defeated CP Ajax 3-2 at Ballaghaderreen. Ronan Mulligan gave CP Ajax an early lead before Billy Maguire headed an equaliser just before half-time. Ballaghaderreen’s Danny Smith and CP’s Mike Kerrane exchanged goals in the second half before Owais Zulfqar scored the winner for Ballaghaderreen with three minutes left to play.
