A man in his fifties has died following a road traffic accident on the R446, old Athlone to Ballinasloe road at Ballydangan. Gardai have yet to reveal the identity of the man in question.

The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. this morning (Thursday) when two vehicles, a car and a bus collided, on what is known locally as a straight stretch of road. It’s understood driving conditions were good at the time of the accident.

The driver of the car sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A child and a female occupant of the vehicle were removed and brought to Portiuncula Hospital for treatment, though their injuries are described as not life-threatening.

The driver the bus and three occupants also sustained injuries in the incident and were also removed to Portiuncula Hospital, though their injuries are described as not serious.

Garda Forensic teams are currently at the scene and the road is currently closed to traffic with local diversions in place. Gardai in Roscommon are appealing for any witnesses to come forward to assist them with their enquiries on 090-6638300.
