Rural schools under attack
By Ciara McCaughley
COUNTY ROSCOMMON has been stripped of its Garda Stations and post offices and now the Government, through stealth cuts, is squeezing the life from rural communities by attacking rural primary schools, a public meeting heard on Monday night. A large crowd of concerned parents and teachers attended a public meeting in Fairymount Hall to discuss concerns over budget cuts in education. The cuts will see a fall in the number of primary teachers in schools with 50 students or less by next September. Principal of Tibhoine NS, Kevin Giblin said his school, which currently had three teachers, would lose a member of staff in September, which would have, he believed, a detrimental effect on students.
A similar meeting to inform parents of the impacts the cuts would have on students was outlined to parents in Ballinagare last week. School Principal Caroline Madigan said that excellent teachers would be lost over the coming years as a result. “In my nearly 20 years in education, this is the most retrograde step I’ve heard coming from the Department,” she said. Meanwhile Deputy Denis Naughten has called on the Minister for Education and Skills to back down on the plans and noted the important role of rural schools within the community.
