An Taoiseach leads tributes to late Michael Barrett TD
An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has led the tributes this week to former Fianna Fáil deputy and Loughglynn native Michael Barrett, who died on Saturday last.
The Taoiseach said that the late Mr Barrett was a hard hard working and committed constituency T.D. who was dedicated to the welfare of his constituents.
Mr Michael Barrett, Glasnevin, Dublin, who died at the Mater Hospital, Dublin on Saturday last, was a Fianna Fail Dail Deputy in Dublin for a number of years. He was a native of Cuiltyboe, Loughglynn and had been an employee of An Foras Taluntais prior to his election to Dail Eireann.
Born on January 15th 1927, he was educated at Loughglynn NS. He was first elected to Dublin Corporation in 1979 and to Dail Eireann in 1981 on his first attempt. He served in the Dail throughout the eighties and also served as Chairperson of the Eastern Health Board.
A traditional Catholic, he was a member of the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child and was trenchant in his support of the anti-abortion amendment in the early eighties. He was also a Minister of the Eucharist in his local Church.
He is survived by his wife, Connie, daughter, Susan, son-in-law, Denis, brother, sister, nieces and a number of other relatives.
Following Concelebrated Mass at the Church of Our Lady of Victories. Ballymun Road, tomorrow, Wednesday at 10a.m., the funeral will take place to Fingal cemetery.
