Lough Ree Theatre Company presents ‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane’
LOUGH REE Theatre Company will present Martin McDonagh’s Tony Award winning play, “The Beauty Queen of Leenane”, for two nights only on Friday, March 18th and Saturday, March 19th.
Lough Ree Theatre Company, in association with Lough Ree Area Development Cooperative, will host the show in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Lanesboro at 8.30 p.m on both nights.
Set in the mountains of Connemara, it tells the darkly comic tale of Maureen Folan, a plain and lonely woman in her early forties and Mag, her manipulative ageing mother, whose interference in Maureen’s first and possibly final chance of a loving relationship sets in motion a train of events that leads inevitably towards the plays terrible show-down.
The play has won the praise of the toughest critics and has been translated into several languages and produced in theatres throughout the world.
In this latest production, the clever and witty script is brought to life by a talented local cast of seasoned performers. Loretta Gallagher tackles the difficult role of Mag Folan, the whinging and domineering mother, while her long suffering daughter Maureen, is played with great flair by Teresa Donlon. The love interest, Pato Dooley, is brilliantly captured by Frank Byrne, and his scattered and flighty brother Ray, is portrayed with comic genius by Mickey Flynn. The four stars of the show are ably supported by a wonderful crew working behind the scenes. Director Patricia Fleming employs her extensive experience in drama, with Eileen Ganly as assistant director. Creating the perfect setting for the action, Elias Casey will be working hard with hammer and nails. Ronan Collier will be shining light on proceedings and Mary McGushin will be coordinating the sound. Following its premiere in Lanesboro, Lough Ree Theatre Company will take the show on tour heading north to the wilds of Donegal in April, performing at Amharclann Ui Shearcaigh in Gortahor, while later taking a southerly course towards sunnier climes with performances in the Spanish resort of Ibiza in May. The admission price is €10 with a concession rate of €8. The company would like to highlight the fact that this play is not suitable for children under 16 years of age. Tickets are available in advance from Lough Ree Area Development Cooperative Office in the Old Convent Building on the Main Street in Lanesboro; Tel. (043) 27070.
