Desperate bid for survival

The devastation we witness nightly on our television screens in Haiti is almost beyond belief.

One of the poorest countries has now been struck a blow of epic proportions.

It may never recover from the earthquake that ripped its heart apart.

Certainly the recovery process cannot even begin properly until the rest of the world comes up with something other than vital emergency aid.

Thousands have died. Tens of thousands of people have been left homeless and destitute.

The people of Port au Prince, the country’s capital, are in dire need of clean water, food, shelter and medication. The scale of the aid operation is huge.

We have no doubt but that the aid will come, but Haiti’s people are desperate.

The fear now is that the frustration could boil over into violence.

In many ways Haiti was a forgotten country. The world turned a blind eye to the widespread poverty. Rebuilding will required sustained efforts.

The world spotlight is currently on Haiti.

What happens when it no longer makes the lead headlines?

In the past other countries have been promised aid, but once the spotlight moved on to the next issue these promises came to nothing.

In the midst of all the disaster there have been stories of great acts of bravery.

These stories offer hope for the future, but for now the struggle for food and water has become a battle for survival.
