Five potential sites identified for cinema

Five potential sites have been identified for a cinema in Roscommon town with the Roscomon County Manager also lending his support to an ongoing campaign to bring a big screen to the county town.

The recently established facebook campaign to bring a cinema to Roscommon town has been gathering momentum over the past number of weeks. The facebook campaign is the brainchild of Oran man Robbie Dwyer and has attracted over 1,000 hits.

Cllr Orla Leyden said this week that five potential locations had been brought to her attention in Roscommon town that would be suitable for a cinema.

The Roscommon town area councillor has made contact with Paul Anderson of Wards and Anderson the cinema group, which dominate the market in Ireland, to make him aware of the opportunity to develop a much needed cinema in Roscommon town.

“I have forwarded a profile of Roscommon town and county and surrounding areas to Mr Anderson.

I emphasised the growth in population over the last 10 years, the fact that we had a cinema in Roscommon town right back to the golden age of cinema in and that at one time we had two cinemas in town and others in neighbouring Castlerea and Strokestown,” she said.
