Holders survive major scare in Moylough
The first round of the G and H sponsored Roscommon and District League Challenge Cup took centre stage last weekend with 32 out of the league’s 34 teams in the league in action.
Cup holders Castlerea Celtic were involved in an epic battle away to Division One side Moylough before winning 5-4 in a penalty shootout.
The game finished level, 22, at the end of extra-time.
Sean Ryan gave Castlerea Celtic a two-goal advantage in the first-half .
Moylough fought back to send the game to extra-time with goals from Padraig O’Reilly and John Keeley.
Newly promoted Ballymoe FC defeated last season’s semi-finalists Loughglynn United 2-0 at Loughglynn.
Colm Killackey won and converted a penalty kick after 60 minutes to give Ballymoe a 1-0 lead.
With ten minutes left to play Keith Collins created an opening for Barry Gaffey and he added a second with a cracking shot from the edge of the penalty area.
They play Castlerea Celtic in Castlerea in the next round.
In a thrilling cup game at Ballinagare, Dunmore Town beat Ballinagare in a sudden death penalty shootout after their game finished level, 33, at the end of extra-time.
John Nolan scored two and Tommy Gill added one for Ballinagare FC. Brendan Bowens scored two and James Gleeson tagged on another for Dunmore Town.
Dunmore won the penalty shootout on a 5-4 scoreline and now have a home game against Cloonfad United in the next round.
In an exciting all-Premier Division clash at Cloonfad, the home side beat Dysart 4-3. Dysart were the better side during the game, despite being reduced to ten men for the last 40 minutes.
David Keavney scored two and Stephen Ronayne added one for Cloonfad United. Cloonfad’s fourth goal was an own goal.
Niall Corbett scored two and Michael Connolly added another for an unlucky Dysart side.
Roscommon Town defeated St. John’s Athletic 2-0 in a local derby game at Roscommon.
With 24 minutes on the clock Johnny Flanagan broke the deadlock. Paul Allen added a second with nine minutes remaining to secure a place for Roscommon Town in Round Two.
Ahascragh United were 70 winners over an injury-hit Cam Celtic side at Ahascragh. Darren Smith and David Leonard scored two each. Kevin Bannerton, Ronan Smith and Marcus O Neill added the remaining goals.
They now play fellow Division One side Roscommon Town in Roscommon in the next round.
Loughglynn United’s second side succeeded where their first team failed. They are through to the second round of the cup and a meeting with Premier Division side Skyvalley Rovers.
The Division Three side beat Division Two side CB Trotters 3-1 inLoughglynn.
Star player Justin Coleman scored two and Sean Mc Donnell added one with the Castleblakney side’s goal coming by way of an own goal.
Premier Division Kilkerrin United were beaten 1-0 by Castlerea Celtic’s second side in Castlerea.
The Division One side with the experienced Greg Kelly, Damien Garvey and Dermott Henry in their starting line up took the lead with 56 minutes played when Darragh Delaney volleyed to the Kilkerrin net. The home side held on to win. The winners are away to Ballinasloe Town in the next round.
Glen Celtic were 1-0 ahead of Division Two side KC Celtic at half-time. Then they went on to win 6-1 in Glenamaddy.
Kieran and Niall Gannon, Paul Beattie, Keith Cunniffe, Simon Swarskey and David Keegan cored for Glen Celtic. Barry Shea pulled a goal back for the Kilconnell-based side.
Ericsson’s Athlone beat Shiven Rovers’ second side 4-0 under the lights at Newbridge.
Quintin Aufroy scored two goals, and John McEntyre and Gary Johnson added one each for Ericsson’s who play fellow Division One side Glen Celtic in the next round.
The Premier Division’s Moore United defeated Division One side Rahara Rovers 4-1 in Moore. Kevin Kenny converted two penalty kicks. David Lennon and Alan Duffy added two more for Moore.
The winners travel to Shiven Rovers in the next round.
Premier Division side Skyvalley Rovers beat the club’s second side 4-0 at Taughmaconnell in their first round game.
The losers were unlucky not to be ahead at half-time through Sean Finneran. Sean Fahy scored two, and David Grehan and Ollie Brooks added one each for the winners.
Strokestown United, who play in the Premier Division, beat Division Three side CP Ajax 3-1 in Strokestown.
The Castleplunkett-based side shocked the home side when Padraig Scott gave them an early lead. However, Patrick Brogan equalised before Conor Silke added two more before the end of the game.
Premier Division leaders Shiven Rovers were made to work hard before overcoming St. John’s Athletic’s second side in Lecarrow.
Owen McDonagh gave them a half-time lead. Peter Gilmore added a second for the Newbridge-based side in injury-time at the end of the game.
They now play Moore United in the next round. Lisnamult Celtic knocked out Manor United following a penalty shootout after their game finished level, 33, at the end of extra-time.
Edmielson scored three for the winners with Ray Cassidy scoring two and Gerry Leech one for the losers. They play at home to Strokestown United in the next round.
Ballinasloe Town dropped two points in their Ruby Oil Premier Division home game against old rivals Skyvalley Rovers.
Both teams had chances to go in front in the first-half.
Adrian Ward finally broke the deadlock when he scored for Ballinasloe Town with 25 minutes left to play.
Ballinasloe Town looked to have wrapped up the three points when Peter Keighery added a second from the penalty spot ten minutes later.
However, the celebrations were short lived as Mike Duignan pulled a goal back for Skyvalley Rovers within seconds of the restart. Sean Fahy added a second a few minutes later to level the game.
