A proud legacy

Tributes have flowed over the past few days to former Michael Glavey’s and Roscommon footballer, the late, great Dermot Earley.

The Gorthaganny native was proud of his native place, proud of his family and proud of the values, skills and attitudes which he learned on Roscommon soil and which brought him far in life.

When Dermot spoke, be it to a class of young children, at the presentation of medals, to new recruits to the army, to a football team before a game or to a group of top ranking army personnel he spoke from the heart and with a depth of passion about his subject.

Dermot’s speeches were usually followed by a standing ovation. Over and over again in the past few days people have spoke about his passion, his principles and his integrity.

For a fit, able-bodied man who held the values of family, religion and country dear to his heart, life dealt him and his family a cruel blow.

His family will take consolation from the hundreds of lives he touched and the memories he left behind.

In the days and weeks ahead as they try to comprehend the enormity of their grief they can take some comfort from knowing that he has left them a proud legacy which will live on.

Roscommon is rightly proud of this native son who left an indelible mark everywhere he went. He may have held one of the top positions in the country, but in Roscommon his army career came second.

Many other players have become synonymous with the county over the years, but no one would have come close to taking Dermot’s position as a ‘Roscommon Legend’. The truth is no one probably ever will.

The Roscommon Herald extends sincere sympathy to his mother, Kitty; his wife, Mary; sons, David, Dermot and Conor and daughters, Paula, Ann-Marie and Noelle; grandson, Oisin and extended family.
