Training courses for young farmers
TEAGASC IS presently accepting applications from young farmers in Counties Roscommon and Longford and surrounding areas for the Advanced Certificate in Agriculture Training Programme which is due to commence at the Teagasc Centre in Roscommon in early October.
This 2 year parttime course, formerly known as the “Green Cert” is aimed at people who have an off farm job and are involved in farming. This will give young farmers, who joined the workforce after leaving school, an opportunity to fulfill their agricultural training needs and achieve a level of excellence in farming.
The course, accredited by FETAC will provide participants with knowledge and skills for the day-to-day running, and long-term management, of the home farm.
In addition, future concessions/benefits for Young Farmers only apply where training has been completed, e.g. stamp duty exemption, Stock Relief etc.
The training prepares participants for: taking over the home farm, seeking employment on farms or in the agri-business sector and pursuing further training in farm management.
While the main aim of this course is to equip people with an expertise in farming, much information is also gained on communications, computers, business development and planning.
Attendance at the course will mark the first contact with Teagasc Advisers for many course participants.
On successful completion of the programme young farmers will meet the training requirements for stamp duty exemption on land transfer, stock relief or priority access to entitlements The course is due to commence on Monday, October 5th at 7 p.m. at the Teagace Centre, Roscommon and will continue with a combination of day and night work over a two-year period.
During the course participants acquire skills and knowledge relating to soils, plants, animal and crop production, the environment, farm buildings, health and safety and computer applications.
Approximately, half the course consists of practical and skills training. Home farm projects, farm planning, discussion group involvement and visits to progressive farms will also feature strongly throughout the course.
There is no minimum educational entry requirement but those who have completed the Leaving Certificate are likely to benefit most from the training. Applicants must be must be involved in farming.
Course fee is €510 and closing date for receipt on completed applications is Friday, July 30th.
