CAR PARK
One often wonders how cars come safe in the grounds of St. Joseph’s Church on a Saturday evening or Sunday morning.
Mass goers running late rush in the gates and swing out to reverse into a parking slot or on some occasions abandon their cars in front of those who have arrived on time it’s an accident waiting to happen.
It has been said that if the car park was lined out more cars would fit in the car park and eliminate the need for illegal parking but it probably won’t stop the rush to Mass!
GRASS CUTTING
While many business and private dwelling owners paint and maintain the exteriors of their premises, it is disappointing to see that the local authority is not playing its part with the cutting of grass on the approaches to the town.
A number of verges have not been cut for weeks and it is becoming unsightly, especially as we are in the middle of judging time for the National Tidy Towns Awards.
TOWN PLAN
The impressive town plan drawn up many years ago by the architectural students from Bolton Street College has again gone on display, this time adjacent to McDonagh’s shop on Bridge Street and it has been met with much enthusiasm by those who visited the display.
When the plan was commissioned, it initially went on display in King House with the 3D model of the town on display for many months in the Library downstairs.
The chamber had many public relaunches of the plans over the years and developers often availed of these in advance of work on various buildings in the town.
It is opportune to again have them available to the public and perhaps someone somewhere will see something that will entice them to look at redevelopment or using the colour scheme from one of the drawings for their house/business.
BUS UPDATES
The Bus Eireann service through our town is an integral part of the transport links we have with the rest of Ireland. The moving of the bus stop to Military Road, while not welcomed by many, is a bit like the one-way system it’s here now and we have to make the best of it.
With a new service on offer from Bus Eireann the old saying “Never run after a woman or a bus there’s always another one coming” won’t have to apply to the people of Boyle as the town is now included on the Bus Eireann Realtime User Service.
This means that bus users will be able to get up-to-the-second arrival/departure times for the bus stop on Military Road direct to their computer or by text to their mobile phone. To avail of this service log onto whensmybus. ie
ANOTHER MOUNTAINEER
As Des McLoughlin commences his climb of Mount Blanc, another Boyle man is planning his mountaineering conquest. Niall Greenan plans to reach the top of Kilimanjaro in Africa setting off this Sunday, July 4th. Bristol University student Niall hopes to raise awareness about global water shortage by his climb.
Well done to Niall and Des and let’s hope they have a safe and enjoyable journey.
ATM
With plans afoot to close the local branch of National Irish Bank many are wondering will the ATM at the branch be withdrawn when the bank leaves?
There was a time when there was only one ATM in town and when it broke down over a weekend, the inevitable trip to Carrick was necessary to withdraw cash.
Now we have two external ATMs with others in shops and filling stations, but the NIB machine is among the most visible.
Let’s hope that the chamber and town council have made representations to ensure the ATM remains in service.
RED CARPET NIGHT
This Saturday night sees Boyle Musical Society’s Red Carpet night in Mirek’s Bar and Restaurant on The Crescent. Following on from the great win at the AIMS ceremony in Killarney on Saturday week, it’s now time to celebrate locally! Events commence at 9 p.m. and an enjoyable night is sure to be had by all.
ANOTHER SIGN OF THE TIMES
The Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise, which opened recently in Galway city attracted over 5,000 applicants for a total of 55 jobs!
