TEAGASC CLOSURE
Friday last saw Teagasc leave Boyle for the last time.
The closure was not unexpected and had been well documented in advance but the lack of activity around the building on Monday morning gave an insight into what it may be like when the NIB closes it’s doors in October and if others follow suit.
Teagasc personnel employed in Boyle have been redeployed to office in Roscommon and Castlerea and the lack of their presence in the town will have a knock on effect on other businesses that they and the users of the Centre frequented while in Boyle.
90 YEARS YOUNG
Congratulations to St. Patrick Street resident Bridie Beirne who celebrated her 90th birthday on Saturday night with a surprise party in Clarke’s Bar and Restaurant. Family, friends and neighbours turned out to join a fresh looking and youthful Bridie on the night. It was a joyful occasion and many stories of old times were recalled. Members of the Beirne family, originally from Rathdiveen on the Carrick Rd. were in attendance and renewed acquaintances with locals who remember them fondly.
LEGAL CHALLENGE
The recent high profile petition to the Circuit Court to have last years Town Council election declared void and a fresh poll held has been the subject of much discussion and debate locally in recent weeks.
With Solicitors and Senior and Junior Counsel for both sides, the event will prove a costly affair in the end from a financial perspective.
While many have been critical of the Town Council over the years, they have shown great leadership in the battle to get services restored in the Day Care Centre at the Plunkett Home.
June 30th will hear closing submissions at Longford Circuit Court and should former sitting Councillor Willie Tiernan win the case, it looks like another Town Council election could be on the cards.
ROAD TRAIN
Another talking point of recent days has been the postponement of trials with the Road Train link between Lough Key Forest Park and the town. As has become customary in Boyle over recent years, misinformation and unhelpful comments have been published (not in the Herald) as to the reason behind the postponement.
This has led to speculation and dangerous finger pointing which is of no assistance and only confuses the matter. There is no doubt that those behind the project are doing everything in their power to ensure it will become a reality.
SOCCER TOURNAMENT
The Ian Beirne Memorial 7a-side soccer tournament will commence on Thursday evening week (15th) at Celtic Park on the Sligo Rd. Ian was one of the town’s great characters and is remembered fondly by his many friends in the town and his colleagues in Boyle Celtic who are to be complimented in honoring him. Entry forms are available from Owen O’ Donohue on 086 2209211.
Boyle has had many great soccer tournaments over the years with the Gala Week event held annually during the eighties in the Pleasure Grounds among the most memorable.
When it was in full swing, one had to been in early each evening to get a viewing spot along the wall on the Carrick Rd., with cars parked all the way from town to Christ the King junction.
TWINS DAY OUT
Many locals travelled to Keash, just outside Boyle yesterday to see thirty three sets of twins and one set of triplets turn up for the South Sligo villages “Twinfest”.
Guests of honor were to have been previously conjoined twins Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf who were to be helicoptered from Cork, staying over in Cromleach Lodge but the storm force winds led to the cancellation of their visit.
The Foxes Den pub was the centre of activity for the unusual gathering and apart from the main event, the expected inter townland banter in advance of the Connacht final was very much to the fore!
N4 CONSULTATION
The preferred route for the N4 Carrick to Dromod road project will be on display in the Landmark Hotel on 13th and 14th July next.
As this road is the main route to Dublin for people from Boyle, now is the time for locals to make known any views they may have on the project.
The exhibition is open from 2 9 p.m. each day.
