Political storm yields fresh opportunities
Recent weeks have beared witness to the volatility and cut and thrust of politics, both on the local and national political landscape.
From the untimely dissent within Fine Gael, which led to an unsuccessful heave and divisions of loyalty in our own constituency, to the election of one of the counties more maverick councillors to the office of Mayorit’s been far from a dull affair.
The attempted coup within Fine Gael saw winners and losers, with Deputy Frank Feighan being elevated to the shadow cabinet last week, while Deputy Denis Naughten was relegated to the shadows of the backbenches.
The chamber of Roscommon County Council was also privy to plenty of political fireworks last week with the emergence of a new alliance that saw Independent Cllr Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan being appointed as the county’s first citizen for the next year.
This followed a new deal between sitting Fine Gael councillors, HAC councillors and Sinn Fein Cllr Michael Mulligan and the new Mayor on the hospital issue, which prompted a political punch and judy show across the council chamber at last week’s AGM.
But now that the storm has passed it is time for calm and for the newly elevated public representatives to take stock of their new roles and how best to use them for the betterment of the people they represent.
The time for political side shows and infighting is over. The electorate is seeking stability and leadership in these troubled waters and times of uncertainty.
It’s now time for cool heads and for our newly elevated politicians to embrace the opportunity that now lies before them and for their political counterparts to set aside any ill feeling in the interests of the people they representthe people of County Roscommon.
