Two escaped prisoners may have fled the country
TWO PRISONERS who escaped from custody while attending a removal in Roscommon town last week are believed to have fled to Britain.
The prisoners are still at large after they disappeared, at a funeral in Roscommon town last Tuesday, while under the supervision of prison officers.
The brothers had been temporarily released on compassionate grounds to attend Smyth’s Funeral Home in Roscommon for the funeral of their brother.
It is understood that the two were driven from the area in a UK registered BMW, and Gardai believe they may have now left the jurisdiction and could be in Britain, where the pair have extensive family connections.
The two male prisoners had sought and were granted temporary release from Castlerea Prison in order to attend the funeral. Both men had been serving three-year sentences on separate assault charges.
The men were being escorted by prison officers when an incident involving up to 40 other people occurred.
The men are understood to have absconded during a scuffle in the funeral home. The officers were said to have been “pushed and shoved” in the incident. Both men are understood to have absconded through a back door of the funeral home.
A spokesman confirmed two prisoners had escaped while on an escorted visit to a funeral home. “Gardaí were immediately notified and the Irish Prisons Service has initiated its own investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
A total of 122 prisoners escaped or absconded from open prisons or while on accompanied outings with prison officers in 2008, according to the Prison Service’s annual report for 2008.
Some 92 of those who absconded were back in custody by the end of the year.
