Boyle based Garda David McDonnell is one of a number of County Roscommon people who are planning to travel to Haiti this April to help build new homes for those affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti. While in Haiti the group will spend the week in the Port au Prince area assisting with the building of houses and community facilities. David needs to raise €4000 to join the other 250 volunteers, with the funds going towards building materials for the projects. He hopes to organise a number of fundraising events in the coming weeks for which your support would be appreciated.
The Oscars
Everyone in Boyle will be glued to their TV screens on March 8th as they wait to see if the animated film “The Secret of Kells”, produced and co created by Boyle man Paul Young, wins “Best Animated Feature” in the Academy Awards. The success of Paul’s company, Cartoon Saloon, has been well documented locally over the years in the pages of the Roscommon Herald. With Brendan Glesson (Abbot Cellach in the film) a regular visitor to the town there will be great excitement locally “win, lose or draw” as Paul’s dad Sean might say!
St Patrick’s Day
Preparations are underway for the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in the town, which will take place in only five weeks time! There is a prize fund of approx •1700 on offer in the various categories. A meeting to prepare for the parade will be held this Wednesday at 8p.m. and all those interested in helping out with are asked to attend.
Art Work
The magnificent surrounds of King House is the chosen location for the launch today (Tuesday) at 3 p.m. of a publication and DVD on the art@work project. This is a project where artists spend three weeks in a company making art influenced by the environment, staff and working practices of the company. In Boyle, artists spent time in Feelystone and Lough Key Forest Park. King House is an ideal location for launches and events like this and it is another facility that we should be proud to have in our town and one that we should make more use of.
Robbery
Sunday evening’s vicious attack on the elderly Quigley bothers at their licensed premises in Collooney has frightened the community of the quiet Sligo town. The number of burglaries and robberies are increasing daily and as a result we need to be observant and conscious of any strange activity especially around the homes of the elderly and those more vulnerable.
Now Doc
There are mixed feelings on the working of the emergency out of hours medical service in this area - Now Doc. There is no question but that the Car-rick based service is manned professionally by the doctors and staff who work there, but the geographical area that it covers can lead to a long delay in some instances for a doctor to make a visit. Added to this is the procedure involved in finally getting to see the doctor with the lengthy analysis of the reason for your call adding to the frustration of the patient on the line. Satisfaction with the service depends on who you talk to and the circumstances of each case that it has to deal with.
People of the Year
Well done to Carlo Cretaro and the other the recipients of the various People of the Year awards, which took place on Friday night last. Hall of Fame winner and Boyle native Paddy Mc Dermott has unselfishly given years of voluntary service to the community and is congratulated on his award. The judges’ decision(s) must have been hard reached as all of the nominees who would have been worthy winners.
