Polls apart

Following disastrous showings in recent polls Brian Cowen and Enda Kenny’s leaderships are under fire.

Fine Gael Deputy Leader Richard Bruton was expected to challenge Enda Kenny, but as we went to press on Monday evening news came of Kenny’s sacking of Bruton. What a display of democracy in action!

In this end of the constituency Deputy Frank Feighan is still backing Kenny, but Deputy Denis Naughten appeared to be holding his cards very close to his chest on the issue.

An opinion poll last Friday showed sharp falls in support for Kenny and the party, which has been overtaken by Labour.

The rumblings that were already there in Fine Gael have now turn into loud groans. It would appear that the poll did confirm the fears of many who believed that Kenny was not at all popular with the public.

Richard Bruton had certainly impressed as the party’s finance spokesman, but would that have made him a good leader or will be ever know now?

The public will now certainly warm to him. However, Eamon Gilmore seems to have captured the public mood for change and become the golden haired, soundbyte boy?

Over in the Fianna Fail camp Brian Cowen has a double fight on his hands, defending the dismal ratings for his party and his own less than impressive record.

Eamon Gilmore might have preferred if he and his party had not “peaked” so soon as despite the pull towards an election, it could yet be some way off.

Many hours of debate have taken place over leadership issues, the faces and characters that may occupy the front benches.

While commentators are having a field day and political analysts try to second-guess everybody, one thing is clear is that the electorate wants change.
