Live Register
The number of people “signing on” in the Boyle area for May ‘10 showed a drop of 13 on the previous month (1009 v 1022) but an increase of 93 on the corresponding May ‘09 (1009 v 916).
Of the 916 seeking assistance, 674 are male and 335 are female. Our nearest neighbours in Carrick-onShannon have 2,635 “signing on”.
Winning Wardens
The bright and colourful Scoil na nAingeal in Boyle was a hive of activity on Friday last as schools from all over the region came to the town to participate in the regional schools warden competition.
In the end the winners were the host school, winners of this competiton on many occasions previously.
As if he hadn’t enough to keep him busy with the county team, local Garda Fergal O’Donnell assists teacher Fiona Keenan in keeping the wardens at the top level.
Fergal took over the role from retired Garda Matty Lyons who is still basking in Sligo’s victory over Mayo on Saturday week!
Competition Winners
Last week’s announcement that Daly’s Lounge and Bar and by association the town of Boyle was the winner of the best window display in a regional radio promotion has brought positive publicity for the town and those who took part.
A special word of congratulations to Sarah Jane Daly who led the initiative from the start. For their efforts €10,000 worth of radio advertising on the radio station i102/104 is the reward.
For the record, Ballina was the winner of the main prize of €40,000 worth of advertising. The winner was chosen from the best window display depicting the radio station, in establishments on any particular street.
On a local level, there is great interest in the €10,000 Roscommon Herald World Cup giveaway with many Boyle businesses matched up with teams in the competition. Log onto the Herald’s facebook page to see what business was drawn with what team.
The Match
All roads lead to Hyde Park in Roscommon next Sunday for the much-awaited clash between Roscommon and Leitrim in the Connacht semi-final.
While most of the traffic will go through Elphin, Boyle should nonetheless get an increase in throughput and it is up to the pubs and food suppliers to capitalise on these commuters and the local fans who will hopefully be in high spirits come Sunday evening.
With the county team having a major Boyle connection, it would be great if business and houses put up bunting and Roscommon flags in support of the players and management.

Day Care Services
Last week’s meeting of Boyle Town Council may have shed some light to those on the street, on the delay in resumption of services at the local Day Care Centre.
While many thought the closure was as a result of the loss of a nurse, the question now being asked is why was a request submitted for two positions a nurse and bus driver and is this the reason for the slow response from the Department?
It has been said here before, the Town Council is to be congratulated for all it is doing to bring a successful conclusion to the impasse, but political point scoring by some councillors on a local level and wondering who will get the credit if the centre opens is irrelevant and should be resigned to the past.
Everyone’s efforts should now be directed at getting the centre open.
