A great big circus

The drama of the past week on the political scene for Fine Gael is abating.

For days Enda Kenny, his survival and the heave against him have been centre stage.

It has been a week of high drama for Fine Gael members.

The vote of confidence in Enda Kenny had them on knife-edge.

Roscommon’s Deputy Denis Naughten was at the centre of it all, finally revealing himself on Tuesday as being one of the nine set to push Kenny.

Remember it was Denis Naughten who proposed Kenny for the leadership eight years ago.

Frank Feighan had already declared his colours, siding with Kenny.

The Fine Gael camp in Roscommon was now divided. Will it remain so is the real question?

The number of politicians walking to the plinth at Leinster House was remarkable.

There was a real media frenzy. But did the ordinary people of Ireland really care?

As Kenny and his supporters emerged triumphantly from Leinster House, some would have been forgiven for thinking that they had just won a general election.

At least the had the wit to cancel the bonfires on the way home to Mayo.

Now attention shifts to Kenny’s new front bench.

Naughten will be sent to the back of the class and Feighan could be promoted. Politics is really a great game, you just know how to play it well.

In the real Ireland hundreds of people will have joined the dole queues over the last week. Hundreds more will have had their homes repossessed. Enda Kenny still has his job.

Fine Gael’s best and brightest, who are about to be demoted, will have realised that while a week is indeed a long time in politics, at least they too still have a job and don’t have to face the prospect of emigration.

All is now rosy in Fine Gael it seems.

They are all singing from the same hymn sheet, unity of purpose.

It’s all really just a great big circus!
