Bonfire Night

With the longest day of the year just passed, tomorrow night brings on Bonfire Night, another traditional night that is unfortunately loosing its significance.

While the burning of tyres is no more, it would still be great if some form of localised get togethers around an open fire was to continue.

Musical Success

Congratulations to Boyle Musical Society who received a round of applause at Sunday morning Mass when Canon Gerry Hanley informed parishioners that the Society had won three major awards the previous night at the AIMS awards ceremony in Killarney.

A brilliant achievement for the Society and the show’s Director Frank O Mahoney.

The Match

A sunny Monday morning in June and a county team in a Connacht final just the medicine the county needs to lift the gloom that exists. The input on the field of “our own” David Casey and Sean Purcell was instrumental in the famous victory.

Well done to all who put out bunting and flags for Sunday’s game but let’s transform the town with primrose and blue in advance of July 18th and show Fergal and the team that we are all behind them.

While it was great to get the win at the weekend, it was an expensive one for many. The Saturday night visit to Tommy Tiernan in St. Joseph’s Hall €28. Off to the Hyde Sunday and if you decided to buy a stand ticket goodbye €30.

Get a drop of petrol, food and a drink on the dayat least another €30 and multiply that by two (without children) and you would not be long seeing the euros disappear!

River Clean Up

One of the prize assets we have in our town the Boyle River is at the lowest it has been for years, resulting in all the algae and rubbish in the river becoming visible, which is proving unsightly to locals and visitors alike.

This Friday night the “Build a Better Boyle Group” is organising a cleanup of the river, meeting at 6.30 p.m. at The Lawn. Everyone is invited to attend and participate and if past clean ups are anything to go by, the cleanup can also prove to be a great social occasion!

A Safe Place

Security and policing of the town of Boyle seems to have upped a level in recent weeks.

Drivers through the town have been the subject of Garda checkpoints in the most unusual of locations in the centre of Boyle during day time hours, with some drivers being stopped in the town twice at different locations in the space of ten minutes!

Add to this the amount of static cameras on buildings and every event and move being photographed by various individuals, we may soon see a situation where crime could become a thing of the past in the town of Boyle?

Good Luck Des

The great turnout on Saturday night at the fundraiser for Des McLoughlin’s climb of Mount Blanc shows the high esteem Des is held in and the appreciation of the fundraising he is undertaking on behalf of Western Alzheimer’s.

Everyone in Boyle wishes Des the best as he leaves Ireland today, Tuesday,to begin the 4810m climb. If you haven’t donated to the worthy cause you can still do so at www.mycharity.ie
