Funding Boost

Good news for Lough Key Forest Park and in turn the Boyle area this week with details announced of a €525,000 allocation under Failte Ireland’s Tourism Capital Investment Programme to provide an additional 40 moorings with floating jetties and a new purpose built service block on Lough Key.

The project is being promoted by Waterways Ireland whose Chief Executive, by coincidence, is John Martin from Boyle. Many will remember John’s father Anthony, who taught for many years in ‘The Tech’. John’s mother Eileen still lives on the Carrick Road. It is stated that up to 8,000 boats enter Lough Key annually and the new marina will provide additional capacity for these visitors

Reunion

This Saturday night sees the former Scoil Chriost an Ri Leaving Cert class of 1980 hold a reunion in the Moving Stairs at 9 p.m..

Reunions are a great night out and an opportune times to renew friendships and reminisce on what has taken place since school finished.

There was great interaction (especially at lunch time and after 4.15 p.m.!) between The Convent and St. Mary’s students, so going forward it may be a good idea if the class from the same year in each school held their reunion on the same night perhaps finishing up with a gathering in The Hall to dance to Horslips, The Bogey Boys or Tweed!

Aviva Opening

With a large contingent travelling to the capital this weekend for the Roscommon match, many will also make the journey to Ballsbridge on Saturday afternoon to see a composite Connacht/ Munster rugby squad take on Leinster / Ulster in the first match in the new Aviva Stadium.

Among those taking to the field for Connacht will be second row Shane Leyden, who is a regular for the Roscommon minors.

Shane is son of Peter and Ita Leyden and his grandparents live on the Carrick Road in Boyle.

Traffic Woes

This column has written only recently on the effect illegal parking has on traffic congestion in the town and this was evident at lunchtime on Friday last when an articulated truck stopped in the middle of the road on Bridge Street and commenced to make deliveries.

The truck made no effort to move off the road way and requests to do so by irate motorists were ignored.

Traffic built up out Military Road until the deliveries were made and the truck moved on. Even the car(s) parked on the traffic island at Eamon Cogan’s could not get out (!)

Shock and Concern

There was shock and concern in the general Boyle area last week when speculation mounted that a man jailed for sexually assaulting teenage girls was living and working not far from the town.

It is alleged that the individual committed the crimes outside of Ireland, but was living in his current location for the last eight years and was well known to many in Boyle.

As the crimes were committed outside this jurisdiction, the man in question is not known to be on the Irish sex offenders’ register.

The events of the last week just go to show that while you may know some of your neighbours, you do not know all of them and parents of young children need to be ever vigilant in this changing society.

Better Boyle

One of the more progressive groupings to have formed in Boyle in recent years is the Chamber of Commerce promoted “Better Boyle” group.

In its short existence it has identified and is dealing with many of the obstacles that have hindered the town’s progress down through they years. One of the most recent initiatives has been the positioning of trees in planter tubs along Main Street and hanging baskets on the street poles.

These ideas were mooted many years ago and the hanging baskets did materalise but due to various reasons the planting of trees on Main Street and St. Patrick Street did not take place.

Well done to this new group and here’s hoping the town will progress further with this vision.

Now if it could only assist in stamping out the begrudgery and the “I’m all right jack” attitude..........!

The Big Match

The past week has seen a spring in the step of the majority of Roscommon folk now that we are Connacht Champions.

This coming week, with fine weather forecast should, we should see the feel good factor continue. The match is eagerly awaited and if we win we’re only one match away from an All-Ireland final!

Thanks to “locals” Fergal, Stephen, Joe, Sean and David and the rest of the team for bringing a smile back on our faces and rest assured we are all proud of you and behind you this weekend.

Job Losses

News over the weekend that MBNA in Carrick is to cut some jobs sent shock waves through the area.

While the number of redundancies may yet be small in the context of the number employed in Carrick, there is natural concern of over reliance on such a large employer in an area as small as ours and the effect a large scale redundancy programme could have if it were to happen.
