President not injured in minor accident near Cootehall

PRESIDENT MARY McAleese and her husband Martin escaped uninjured when their official car was involved in an accident near Cootehall on Saturday evening.

The president’s car collided with another vehicle at a junction in the townland of Woodbrook near the President’s holiday home in Cootehall.

It is understood that the Garda driver and the driver of the other car also escaped without injury. The accident occurred just after 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

President McAleese was not on official duty at the time. Gardai are investigating the incident.

The President had performed the official opening of the Shannon Boat Rally in Carrick-on-Shannon earlier that day.
