Boxing: Tyson to visit Gurteen
Former world heavyweight boxing legend Mike Tyson will be visiting the region next Monday, March 27. ‘Iron Mike’ will be calling to Kane’s Hill Hotel in Gurteen, County Sligo to meet up with the hotel’s owners, Michael and Marion Kane. The former ring master will dine with Michael and Marion and friends in the Gallery Bar and Restaurant before listening to live music from Kevin Conlon. Kevin’s Rock n Reel CD was given to Tyson as a gift from Michael and Marion.
The Kanes were introduced to Mike Tyson some years ago by mutual friend, Joe Egan. Joe, author of the recently launched ‘Big Joe Egan’, and descibed by Mike Tyson as “the toughest white man on the planet”, is a lifelong friend of Tyson.
Michael and Marion dined with Tyson in Las Vegas and New York and told him about their hotel. The boxing legend always vowed to visit the West of Ireland, the home of some of Ireland’s great boxing heroes past and present.
Tyson believes that there must be something in the water or is it the whiskey?
With the former heavyweight champion visiting Ireland, he is making it his business to call to the Kane’s to visit their newly refurbished hotel and to listen to some good Irish traditional and folk music produced in the west.
