Gurteen native retires after 17 years as CEO of Irish Dairy Board

Tributes continue to be paid over the past week to Dr Noel Cawley, a native of Moygara, Gurteen, who is resigning this week after serving 17 years as Chief Executive of the Irish Dairy Board.

Son of the late Thomas and the late Mrs Elizabeth Cawley, he was first appointed to the Irish Dairy Board in 1974 and his variety of roles have included Research and Development, Commercial, Marketing and General Management. He was appointed its Executive Director in 1976 and its Chief Executive in 1989.

A member of a farming family of three, he was educated at Mullaghroe NS, and St Nathy’s College, Ballaghaderreen. He obtained a first class honours B. Sc degree at University College, Galway in 1967 and first place in the faculty. He obtained the Ph.D at University College, Dublin in 1970 under the auspices of a Guinness scholarship. Being the recipient of the Fullbright scholarship he undertook further post graduate studies at the University of California , Berkley and obtained the Post Doctoral Fellowship.

Dr Cawley worked for Arthur Guinness UK from 1971 to 1974 where he held development, brewing and middle management responsibilities.

The Irish Dairy Board, formerly An Bord Bainne, has 3,000 staff worldwide and 130 in Ireland. It is one of the oldest and most successful indigenous mutinational Irish companies and has its headquarters at Grattan House, Lower Mount Street in Dublin. The Kerrygold brand gives the Dairy Board a strong marketing identity worldwide and it is the only recognisable irish food brand established in a variety of overseas markets.

Dr Cawley has engaged in a great deal of travel in association with his work roles over the years and especially to Europe and the USA.

Dr Cawley is a Director of Bord Bia to which he was appointed in 1995. He has served as Chairman of the Audit Committee from 2001 to 2004 and has also served as Chairperson of the Irish National Committee of the International Dairy Federation. He also has the distinction of having been the first Chairperson of the Irish Horse Board, serving from 1993 to 2001. The particular body started with no assets and now it has 12,000 members and a net worth of €500,000. It provides a broad range of services to its members.

He has also been a member of five specialist groups set up by successive Ministers for Agriculture to draw up five-ten year plans for the development of agriculture and food since 1980, including the most recent in 2004.

He is an honourary life member of the RDS and a member of its management board, audit sub-committee, remuneration subcommittee and Council. He is also a member of the Executive Council of IBEC. Married to Anita, who is a native of County Tipperary, they have two girls. His hobbies include golf and horse breeding. He is a stud owner and farms in County Kildare and County Sligo. He is a member of Naas Golf Club and Boyle Golf Club.

Dr Cawley now intends to visit his brother John at Drum, Boyle, more often and also his many friends in his native Gurteen and surrounds while also intends to devote a good deal of his spare time to his horses.
