Work to begin on upgrading of Roosky-to-Tarmonbarry road

Work is to begin shortly on the upgrading of the Roosky-to-Tarmonbarry road. The work will take place from Tarmonbarry crossroads at the Roosky village end up to Clonfad. This section of the road will be strengthened and resurfaced at a cost of €82,000, provided out of Roscommon County Council’s own annual budget. A further section from Clonfad to Buncocca Bridge at the Kilbarry/Cloonshanna junction will be surfaced dressed at a cost of €45,000 again out of the council’s annual budget.

According to Mayor Tom Crosby the annual budget provided for the restoration maintenance and general upkeep of approximately eight hundred miles of road in the Strokestown Electoral Area was €2m. The area includes the villages and towns and their hinterlands stretching from Roosky across to Elphin out to Tulsk all of Strokestown area across to the Fourmilehouse over to Ballyleague, Ballagh and back across to Tarmonbarry and takes in all of the county roads, regional Roads and cul-de-sacs.

Cllr Crosby has called on all of the Oireachtas members TDs and senators to have the Government provide substantial additional funds for this seven mile stretch of road from Roosky to Tarmonbarry so that a number of the danger black spots could be dealt with, as it would be impossible to fund out of the very limited council’s resources.

“This essential upgrade would involve removing dangerous turns and widening the road. The reality is that it would take the entire council budget for the next three or four years to bring this road up to an acceptable standard. Of course it would be impossible to get all council funds for this road,” said Cllr Crosby, Cllr Crosby also welcomed the strengthening and resurfacing of the bad stretch of road from Carrandoe Bridge through Lavagh up to Carrigeen.
