Cam close gap on leaders Ballinasloe

Ballinasloe Town 1 Cam Centre 2

Cam Celtic recorded a 2-1 victory against Ballinasloe Town in a top of the table clash on Saturday week last. This was a superb exhibition from the cream of the Roscommon and District U-16 League. Two superb sides were on display, willing to play good football.

This was a must-win game for Cam, who found themselves five points behind Ballinasloe beforehand. The leaders boasted the league’s best defensive record with only three goals conceded to date. A supreme effort was required by a younger Cam team as a result. And they didn’t disappoint. Cam started brightly with Anna McCormack pulling the strings in midfield. After some close calls, the breakthrough arrived after 16 minutes.

A neat interchange of passing between Rebecca Joyce and Aine Kelly was enough to put Anna Mc Cormack through on goal. She gave the Ballinasloe goalkeeper no chance with a bullet-like shot low to the corner.

Cam continued to dominate. However, their fortune changed five minutes later when a brilliant tackle by the superb Bridgetta Menton was harshly adjudged to be a foul. The resultant penalty was dispatched, despite the best efforts of Emma Coughlan in the Cam goal. This spurred Cam into action once again. They bombarded the Ballinasloe goal and were rewarded with the lead goal after 35 minutes.

The excellent Rebecca Joyce hit her shot low to the corner after a great build-up involving midfield duo Maeve Gately and Anna McCormack. Ballinasloe came out all guns blazing in the second half and it took some superb defending from Miriam Carney, Bridgetta Menton, Michelle Kelly and Katie Egan to keep them at bay. Debutant goalkeeper Emma Coughlan came into her own with some superb saves. Cam were always dangerous on the break.

Aisling Byrne was unlucky with 10 minutes remaining when she was put through by a Miriam Carney clearance. Her well-hit shot went agonizingly past the Ballinasloe post. Cam held out against strong Ballinasloe pressure for a well-deserved win that throws the league wide open with two matches each to play. The decider could well take place in Cam in two weeks when the two league leaders meet in the final match.

CAM CELTIC: Emma Coughlan, Michelle Kelly, Katie Egan, Miriam Carney, Bridgetta Menton, Anna McCormack, Aisling Byrne, Maeve Gately, Rebecca Joyce, Emer Kelly, Aine Kelly, Orla Grehan. Cam players Kara Dolan, Claire Kelly, Claire Grehan, Marie Connolly, Joan Burke and Claire Kelly have been selected on the Roscommon League panel for an intercounty tournament in February/ March.
