Castlerea prevail at their leisure

Castlerea Community School 2-19 Balla Community College 0-5 Castlerea Community School defeated Balla Community College in the first round of the Connacht Colleges Division C Junior Championship at Balla. Although this was a onesided affair, both sides played some good football.

Castlerea were the betterbalanced team, but Balla kept plugging away until the final whistle. The winners enjoyed a 1-7 to 0-4 advantage at the interval.

Castlerea exerted pressure right from the secondhalf throw-in. They scored a further 1-12 to run out easy winners. While this was a team victory, with all 18 players used playing their part, there were good performances from Aofin Beirne, Michael Sweeney, Mark Reynolds, Sean Morris, Ciaran Finan. Thomas Hanley, Darren McDermott, Eamon Greene, Bernard Carty and goalkeeper Des Ryan.

Meanwhile Ballinamore Community College defeated Castlerea Community School in the first round of the Connacht Colleges Division C Senior Football Championship in Frenchpark on Wednesday last. Ballinamore prevailed by ten points, 1-16 to 1-6.

This was a fine game of football from start to finish. Castlerea started well and were 0-4 to 0-2 to the good after 20 minutes. However, they lost centre-forward Darren McDermott through injury. As a result, their rhythm was upset as Ballinamore upped their game to lead 0-9 to 0-7 by half time.

Castlerea began to put on the pressure early in the second-half. However, despite dominating play in the first five minutes of the half, they failed to add to their tally. Ballinamore began to find their rhythm once again, scoring four points on the trot to lead by 0-13 to 0-4 with ten minutes remaining.

To their credit, Castlerea fought back, scoring a goal and two points without reply. However, as a result of some poor finishing, they failed to pull this game out of the fire.

Ballinamore held on to win, but they had to fight hard to defeat a gallant Castlerea side that were short seven regular players. Castlerea were also guilty of making several mistakes, which led to Ballinamore scores.

Michael Higgins, Padraic Flanagan, Michael Sweeney, Shane Hegarty, Neil Collins, Thomas Hanley, Ciaran Finan, Bernard Carty, James Keenan, Cathal Staunton, Jarlath Geraghty and Darren McDermott were best for Castlerea.
