Move or makeover
I am really keen on sprucing up my wooden garden furniture this year as I am hoping we might get more of a summer. I love the shabby chic look can you suggest anything fabulous?
Dining outdoors is one of my favourite things to do during the summer months. There's nothing nicer than the smell of freshly cut grass, the warmth of the sun on your skin and a fabulous meal enjoyed with friends and family. And although we've been washed out recently, there really is no time like the present to prepare yourself for the (hopefully) hot summer months ahead! Firstly, the easiest way to spruce up garden furniture is to paint it. All you have to do is sand down the chairs and table, wipe them clean and then choose the right finish. A liquid gloss or satin finish is perfect for this so take care when choosing and buying your paint.
I love sage greens combined with simple whites or creams. Something like Crown's Almost Sage and Simple White would be perfect for this. If you have a six-seater dining set, then why not paint three seats in Almost Sage and three in Simple White? It will certainly spruce everything up. Don't forget to paint the table as well – painting it green will really bring everything alive! Other fantastic colour schemes that would work really for you would include using Mediterranean colours such as gorgeous sea blues. Crown's Jet Stream combined with Mascarpone would really go down a treat.
Add gorgeous seat cushions to your chairs as well. Not only will they make seats more comfortable, but with the fantastic designs that are now available in most chain stores around Ireland, it really adds to the overall effect. Organic prints with a floral or forested design are really gorgeous, and if you want to add in a punch of colour, try any of the trend citrus colours that are available this season.
For a real African dinner experience, why not cover the table with a nice linen tablecloth or muslin? Muslin is a fantastic fabric to work with and washes really easily for any spills and accidents that might occur. For dramatic effect cover chairs as well.
To dress the table, use simple table decorations such sea shells and pebbles and scatter them down through the centre of the table. Mix with tea lights for a truly sophisticated and elegant look.
Don't stop at the table and chairs! Why not paint large terracotta pots using Mediterranean blues, lime greens or any of the citrus colours. Colours like Caribbean green or Caribbean intense from the Colours of the World range can be mixed using a Crown Weathercoat base to create a great look that will last throughout the summer. This will allow you to bring all of the trend colours for this year outside and keep you up-todate. Then next year simply repaint the pots for a whole new look!
To really have some fun, why not create an 'outdoor carpet' for your dining set? Any one with paving stones can do this. Simply paint the concrete around your dining area to create a dining zone, making sure to come at least 300 / 600mm from the table.
This effect can be achieved using Sandtex 365 pliolite and can be tinted in a number of colours. Choose colours that will complement your gorgeous new furniture and really give you a trendy edge.
Get the kids involved in all the excitement and ask them to make place mats for the table. Using cardboard, cut out a rectangular or circular shape and let the kids go wild! Pick a theme, such as nature or foliage, or something that ties in with your colour scheme. They'll enjoy it as much as you will.
As you're refurbishing your outdoor furniture, don't forget about any garden benches or garden sheds. These can be real eyesores if not taken care of correctly. Choose colours that complement your house colours and work well in your garden. If you want to be adventurous, why not paint the walls of your shed one colour and the roof another? This could act as a focal point in your garden.
