Roscommon Drama Festival provides nine great nights of memorable performances
The 2009 Roscommon Drama Festival provided nine nights of memorable performances that both entertained and challenged audiences at Roscommon Arts Centre.
A combination of well-loved favourites, together with more contemporary productions were presented by the many visiting groups. In the end it was Wexford’s day, with the Bunclody / Kilmyshall drama group’s production of ‘The Wake’ taking the top honours in the open section. ‘The Wake’ was directed by Knockcroghery native Pat Connaughton.
Kilmuckridge Drama Group’s interpretation of ‘Juno and the Paycock’ scooped the honours in the confined section of the competition. Adjudicator Dara Carolan said he would delight in the “glorious memories that offered themselves” to him throughout the week. He also had high praise for the festival, Arts Centre, audience and community.
Mr Carolan noted that for him the audiences’ “belief in the true meaning of a festival, a celebration of theatre by a community, this week’s memories have been bound in your great response to the festival.” In her closing address Chairperson Mary Cox thanked everyone who supported, sponsored and contributed over the past number of months to help make the festival the resounding success that it was.
The full list of winners included the main award in the open section: Bunclody/Kilmyshall Drama Group for ‘The Wake’; the main award in the confined section, Kilmuckridge Drama Group for ‘Juno and the Paycock’; Best Director in the open section, Pat Connaughton of the Bunclody/Kilmyshall Drama Group for ‘The Wake’; Best Director in the confined section, Andy Doyle of the Kilmuckridge Drama Group for ‘Juno and the Paycock’; Best Actor in the open section, William Lyons of the Shoestring Theatre for the part of Kenneth McAllister in ‘A Night in November’; Best Actor in the confined section, Richard Devereux of the Kilmuckridge Drama Group for the part of Captain Boyle in ‘Juno and the Paycock’; Best Actress in the open section, Elaine Jordan of the Bunclody/Kilmyshall Drama Group for the part of Vera in ‘The Wake’; Best Actress in the confined section, Marie Johnston of the Kilmuckridge Drama Group for the part of ‘Juno in Juno and the Paycock’; Best Supporting Actor in the open section, Fergal Kelly of the Bunclody/Kilmyshall Drama Group for the part of Finbar in ‘The Wake’; Best Supporting Actor in the confined section: Ollie Turner of the Dunmore Amateur Dramatic Society for the part of Tom in ‘Conversations on a Homecoming’; Best Supporting Actress in the open section, Mary Gibson of the Bunclody/Kilmyshall Drama Group for the part of Mrs Conneeley in ‘The Wake’; Best Supporting Actress in the confined section, Anne Dunne of the Kilmuckridge Drama Group for the part of Mrs Tancred in ‘Juno and the Paycock’; the Best Stage Setting went to Bunclody/Kilmyshall Drama Group for ‘The Wake’ while the Adjudicator’s Award went to Lorcan Mannion and James Harris from K.A.T.S. Galway for the parts of Katchurian and Michael in ‘The Pillowman’.
A Merit Award went to Ruth O’Driscoll of Compántas Lir for the part of Belinda in ‘Johnny Belinda’ while Sean McIntyre, Daniel Mimna and Owen Doonan of the Cornmill Theatre Group also received a merit award for the soundscape in ‘Kevin’s Bed’. A third merit award went to Eric Healy of the Corofin Dramatic Society for the part of Liam Scuab in ‘Sive’ and Darragh Kirby from the Kilmuckridge Drama Group also received a merit award for the part of The Immobilzer in ‘Juno and the Paycock’.
The Perpetual Award went to the Bunclody/Kilmyshall Drama Group for ‘The Wake’.<
