Local Notes: Bake Sale, Baggot Cup, golden jubilee celebrations

Kiltullagh Ladies Group is hosting a Coffee Morning and Homemade Bake Sale on Sunday, September 27th from 11.30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Granlahan Community Centre (F45 T285). All proceeds will go towards Mayo Roscommon Hospice and Cancer Care West. Please come along, enjoy some refreshments and delicious homemade baking, and support these very worthy causes.
The fish were in top form and the action never stopped during the Lake O’Flynn Angling Baggott Cup Competition in Ballinlough. A solid 3½ lb specimen landed by Peter Corcoran took the top spot. Results: 1st, Connie Finnerty & Peter Corcoran; 2nd, Ronan Baggott & Dan McDermott; 3rd, Shane Stephens & Anton Stephens; Heaviest Fish, Peter Corcoran — 3½ lbs. The fieldwork for the Kilcroan Graveyard Digital Mapping Project is now complete. A draft map is available to view at the front door of St. Croan’s Church, Ballymoe. The Kilcroan Cemetery Committee sincerely thanks everyone who came along on Sunday week last to help clean the cemetery for September. Ballymoe FC will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a weekend of events. The weekend will start with the senior team playing their first home game of the season versus St John’s Athletic on Friday, September 25th at 8 p.m.. All support for the team on the night would be appreciated. On Saturday, September 26th the club looks forward to welcoming everyone to Ballymoe FC for an afternoon and evening of football, memories, and community celebration. There will be underage games from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.. Celebrations will continue at 5.30 p.m. and everyone is invited to attend at the pitch in Ballymoe. This will be followed at 6.30 p.m. by a football game between past players in a legends match. The winners of this match will receive the Pat Joe McDonald Memorial Trophy. After the football the celebrations will move on to The Tavern for refreshments, a raffle, and plenty of time to share memories and celebrate past glories. Fifty years of dedication, commitment, and community spirit is a wonderful achievement. The club hopes all can join in to mark this special milestone.
In what was a disappointing weekend for the club both the GAA and Lgfa adult teams were defeated in their championships. On Friday night last the ladies made the journey to Padraig Pearses where they were defeated by the home club in the intermediate semi-final. On Saturday the men’s team also took on Padraig Pearses in the senior championship quarter final. They got off to the perfect start with a goal scored by Darragh Heneghan in the first few minutes. At full time the sides were level but Pearse’s pulled away in extra time to win. Pearse’s are a much bigger club than Glavey’s and their panel strength was evident in extra time. However, the Glavey’s players can take pride in their efforts.
Cloonfad entertainment committee is organising a one minute movie competition. The theme is Halloween and horror of any kind. Entries should be with the committee by October 22nd.
The entertainment committee is planning a movie fancy dress night to be held in the Three counties Bar on Saturday, October 24th. Great prizes and all are welcome.
On Friday night in Dec's Bar Castleplunkett Tulsk GAA Club launched its new club app and new Friends of Tulsk 50/50 Draw. The club app is free to download and will be a way to keep in touch with all club news and events, fixtures and results as well as a means of playing the club's new 50/50 Draw.
Kilmurry Hall will host a Harvest Party for senior citizens on Sunday, September 27th as part of Roscommon County Council’s Social Inclusion week. The party will commence with Mass at 4.30 p.m., a hot meal will be served, followed by music with Jimmy Kearney and Terry McGowan. If you wish to reserve a place at the meal please contact 087 6627782 before Monday, September 21st as places are limited for the meal.
Cootehall, Crossna & Drumboylan Defibrillator Group has launched a fundraising appeal. Until the first week of October, members of the committee will be calling to every house in the parish of Ardcarne with donation envelopes. The group is asking for your support to help raise enough money to purchase six new, state-of-the-art defibrillators to replace the existing units, which are now reaching the end of their operational lifespan. Every donation, no matter how big or small, will make a difference. Support will help ensure that the community continues to be a safe place to live, work and visit. Please support the fundraising appeal and help the group continue to provide this vital, potentially life-saving service within the community.

The Kilnalag Community Garaden on the approach road to Williamstown from Dunmore is a special location and it is beginning to realise its full potential. There are a number of elements to this unique site, including the historic aspect, which is huge, considering that this was the local town prior to the building of Williamstown, the green area and the community garden section. Plans are well underway in the short term for the enhancement of all three elements. The work done last week on the surfacing of the community garden section, under the supervision of the local Tidy Towns group, is a major step forward. Well done to all involved.
Before taking the usual break for the winter period, Williamstown Heritage Society is having one more meeting, on September 30th. This gathering will be very informal, mostly taken up with food and chat.
