WATER SAFETY

With warmer weather expected in the coming days, people are being reminded to swim safely and take extra care around water. Local Councillor Micheál Frain said we are lucky to have many beautiful lakes and rivers in the area, including Lough Gara, Errit Lake and Loughglynn Lake, as well as a close proximity to beaches in Mayo and Sligo but urged everyone to exercise caution. Anyone planning to swim outdoors should never swim alone, should choose a safe and familiar location, avoid strong currents or deep unknown water, and always tell someone where they are going and when they expect to return. Swim within your ability, enter the water slowly, avoid alcohol before swimming, and keep a close eye on children at all times. Whether you are cooling off in Lough Gara, relaxing at Errit, or enjoying Loughglynn Lake, please be careful, be sensible and stay safe around water.
