Local Notes: Bereavements, Welsh Trip, Speech & Drama Club Return

The death took place peacefully last week of Mr Denis Brady, Tuam, and formerly of Tibohine, at the Stella Maris Nursing Home in Tuam. Pre-deceased by his wife, Maureen in 2009, brother, Jimmy, sisters, Irene, Rita, Philomena and Josie, he will be sadly missed by his sons, Brendan, David, and Kevin; daughter-in-law, Catherine; grandchildren, Shannon, Amy, Callum, and Rossi; sister-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. His remains were removed to the Cathedral of the Assumption, Tuam on Monday, August 24th last. Following Requiem Mass, the funeral proceeded to Lackagh New Cemetery.
The peaceful death occurred at home of Mrs Mary Savage, Karol Avenue, Elphin and formerly of West Midlands, England on Thursday, August 21st last. Sister of Padraig Noone, Knockglass, Ballinameen, Mary is also deeply regretted her son, Michael; daughters, Lorraine and Sarah; grandchildren; sisters, Kathleen, Teresa and Margaret; brother, Hugh; extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends. Her remains were removed from Brady’s Funeral Home to St. Patrick's Church, Elphin on Sunday evening last. Following Mass of the Resurrection on Monday, August 24th, Mary was laid to rest in Caldra Cemetery.

The family sports day at Tibohine Community Centre, which was due to take place on Sunday, August 23rd last was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Apologies for any inconvenience. There are some fun events planned for later in the year so keep an eye out.
Scrabble takes place every Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ballaghaderreen Library. The Crafty Notions group for any type of needle work meets every Friday at 10 a.m.. Western Gaels held its weekly lottery draw on Saturday, August 22nd last. There was no jackpot winner. The numbers drawn were 7, 11, 15 and 18. Cash prize winners (€20 each) were Padraig Brehony, John Cullinan, Mark Drury, Eddie Finn and Catherine Waldron. The next draw (jackpot €4,100) will take place at the clubhouse in Frenchpark on this Saturday, August 29th. Tickets are available on-line through the Clubforce app or from local outlets.

After victory over St. Barry’s in their most recent fixture, Tulsk’s third and final match in the group phase of this year’s Intermediate Championship competition takes place this Friday, August 28th against St Brigid's ‘B’ in Ballyforan. After atoning for their opening day loss to St. Dominic’s, the side will be hoping to book a place in the knock-out phase of the competition with a win at the weekend.
The congratulations of the entire community are extended to Tulsk representative Devan Curran, who has come home with a silver medal from the national Community Games finals following his participation in the long jump track and field event. A young man with very considerable talents, Devan follows in the footsteps of other great jumpers such as Bob Beamon and Carl Lewis in forging his undoubted excellence.
Local members of the County Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society were in Wales last week for a tour of the country’s extensive historic castles network, under the guidance of good friend, Dr. Kieran O’Conor of the University of Galway. The group visited a number of UNESCO World Heritage sites include Harlech and Caernarvon Castles and a number of other fascinating historical features. The group was expertly transported on the journey by Kevin Clarke of Clarke’s Transport, Tulsk.
To coincide with National Heritage, the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre in Tulsk hosted a storytelling event to coincide with the launch of Finnbennach Bull Sculpture last Thursday in the centre. This original sculpture, funded through Roscommon LEADER Partnership, was made by local Longford artist, Liam Kavanagh and will serve as a landmark sculpture for Tulsk. It celebrates the early Irish stories which inspired its creation, as well as the countless generations of farming communities who have farmed amongst the monuments of Rathcroghan, the ancient capital of Connacht. The bull, made of stainless steel, represents the monstrous Finnbennach, the White Bull of Connacht, who was the property of Ailill Mac Máta, the husband of the Warrior Queen Medb (Maeve) of Connacht, whose home is at Rathcroghan. It is from here that she assembles the armies of Ireland to go across to Cooley, County Louth, in order to kidnap the only equal to the Finnbennach on the island, the Donn Cuailnge, the Brown Bull of Cooley.
Tulsk History Society’s annual trip takes place on Sunday, August 31st with a visit to a number of historic sites and amenities in County Longford. Departing Tulsk at 9.30 a.m. that morning, the group will arrive in Ballinamuck and visit the 1798 Visitor Centre where there will be an illustrated talk, film screening and visit to the local battlefields and ‘croppy field’. Later at 1.30 p.m. the group will adjourn for refreshments in Ballinalee at the Rose Cottage, which was the late General Sean MacEoin’s (otherwise known as the Blacksmith of Ballinalee) military quarters during the War of Independence. Later that day at 3 p.m. the group will visit the Maria Edgeworth Centre in Edgeworthstown, which tells the story of one of Ireland’s most distinguished literary figures and the influence extended by the landlord class in the eighteenth century. The travelling party will then depart Longford at approximately 5 p.m... There are a limited number of places available on the trip, therefore early booking is advisable through any committee member or through the Society’s Facebook page.
It is a busy week for teams representing the St. Mary’s Ladies Football club as later this evening, the club’s minors travel to Ballinameen to face Northern Harps in their championship fixture. Then on Sunday, the club’s U-16’s travel to Kiltoom to face St. Brigid’s in their championship semi-final at 4.30pm. Later that evening at 6.30pm, the club’s U-12’s are at home to Shannon Gaels in their Autumn League fixture at 6pm.
The ever popular Who Shot Queen Medb talk by Mike McCarthy of the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre will be given on Friday, September 25 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. in The Factory Performance Space, Lower Quay Street, Sligo, F91 H327. Journey back in time to the prehistoric Iron Age to share in an evening of storytelling recounting some of the oldest tales in Irish mythology. Mike has previously given this talk in a number of venues, including the Roscommon Arts Centre, where it has received very favourable reviews.
This Thursday the club’s U-12 camogie team have joint fixtures at 6.45 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. against Oran while the club’s U-16 camogie stars are at home to Boyle at 7 p.m. in their championship semi-final. Later this Sunday, August 30th, the U-14’s are at home to Roscommon Gaels in their championship final from 12 noon.
The Tulsk U-16 boys have an important championship quarter-final this Friday, August 28th in Cootehall when they face a St. Michael’s/St. Ronan’s combination at 7pm. The best wishes of the entire community are extended to the team and its mentors.

Ríoga Speech and Drama classes return to Tulsk Macra Hall on Saturday, September 5th from 10 a.m.. These fun, confidence-building classes through speech, drama, and performance will also focus on Feis preparation for those wishing to take part in competitions and speech & drama exam preparation for students working towards their next grade.
