Pupils from Abbeycartron National School are taking part in the WEEE Ireland Schools’ Battery Recycling Challenge. Well done to Ms. Russell's class who collected the most batteries in the month of December. Thanks to Catherine from Abbeycartron PA who gave goody bags to the class.

ABBEYCARTRON NS TAKING PART IN BATTERY CHALLENGE 

Pupils from Abbeycartron National School are taking part in the WEEE Ireland Schools’ Battery Recycling Challenge. They need your help with collecting used batteries, so that they can be in with a chance of winning a €2,000 sports equipment voucher for the school. In your home, there could be used batteries hiding in the Christmas tree lights, old toys, outdoor decorations, watches, talking teddies/dolls, keyboards, electric toothbrushes or razors, battery powered candles, old remote controls, old radios etc. Please don’t put them in a drawer or the bin. Give them to a pupil of Abbeycartron National School and they will happily add them to the collection.

DR. JOHN STAFFORD TRADFEST RETURNS 

After a long hiatus, the official return of the Dr. John Stafford Tradfest has been announced. It’s time to dust off the instruments, warm up the vocal cords, and gather once again to celebrate the very best of traditional music, culture, and community from Friday, February 20th to Sunday, February 22nd. Expect a weekend packed with live sessions, workshops, competitions and that unmistakable tradfest atmosphere.

HEALTHY CLUBS CHALLENGE

There is still time to join the Irish Life GAA Healthy Clubs Challenge. Both Elphin GAA and Ballinameen GAA have signed up, so it’s time to step up for the challenge and help them reach the target of 4,000 km to be in with a chance of winning prize funding of €2,500.

AA meetings are held on Mondays at 8 p.m. in Elphin Community Centre. Access at rear of building.

Thank you to everyone who supported the Monday bingo sessions throughout last year and to everyone who helped make it all run smoothly. Elphin Bingo every Monday now starts at 8 p.m. in Elphin Community Centre. Thank you for your continued support.

SOS ELPHIN

 The Elphin SOS service is available to everyone in all the local parishes, villages and towns. It is a free, confidential and anonymous service. Contact the Health Centre, Chapel Street, Elphin for full details. Always remember you are not alone - reach out.

TIDY TOWNS 

The Elphin Tidy Towns group meets every Saturday at the polytunnel at the Day Care Centre at 10.30 a.m.. Volunteers always needed.

TOWER BAR SESSIONS

 The Tuesday night traditional music sessions in the Tower Inn welcomes all musicians and listeners. The next of the monthly singers sessions will take place on Sunday, February 1st.

ROBERT BURNS NIGHT 

On Sunday, January 25th William Campbell of the Townhouse B&B will be providing a night of Scottish music as it will be Burns Night (in memory of Robbie Burns the Scottish poet). Singers and musicians welcome to the Tower Inn on Sunday the 25th for a night of great entertainment.

Elphin rounders teams are looking for new players, all ages and abilities welcome. No rounders in your club? No worries, you can still register with Elphin GAA Rounders Club. ADULT SET DANCING CLASSES

The mobile library visits Elphin every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3.30 p.m..

CORTOBER RESIDENTS MEETING 

A meeting of Cortober Residents Association will take place on this Tuesday, January 20th at 8 p.m. in the Patrician Hall, Cortober. All members are requested to attend.

LATE MRS MARY TAYLOR 

The death occurred on Sunday, January 11th, at the Shannon Lodge Nursing Home, Roosky, of Mrs Mary Taylor (née Nolan), Dacklin, Carrick-on-Shannon. Predeceased by her husband, Thomas and brothers, John and Pat, Mary will be sadly missed by her family, Thomas (Carmel), Ailish (Fred), Daire (Gillian), Ciara (Jimmy) and Gearoid (Cema), grandchildren, extended family, friends and neighbours. Mary reposed at the home of her son Thomas on Tuesday, January 13th. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday in St. Michael's Church, Drumlion, followed by interment in Drumlion Cemetery.

HOUSE CALLS 

Fr. Alan P.P. will visit the sick and housebound in the parish on Thursday and Friday, January 22nd/23rd, at the usual times.

LATE MRS MARY HANLY 

The death occurred on Wednesday, January 14th, at the North West Hospice, Sligo, of Mrs Mary Hanly (née Bermingham), Cordrehid, Carrick-on-Shannon and formerly of Trien, Castlerea. Predeceased by her parents, Kathleen and John and her beloved son, Ronan, Mary will be sadly missed by her husband, Mark; daughters, Rosaleen (O'Dowd) and Martina; sons, Coman and Michael; son-in-law, Damien; daughters-in-law, Noreen and Edel, Martina's partner Joe; grandchildren, sister, Margaret Duffy (Keash); brother, Tom Bermingham (Castlerea); sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, neighbours and friends. Mary reposed at the home of her son Coman and daughter-in-law Noreen on Friday, January 16th. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, January 17th in St. Michael's Church, Drumlion, followed by interment in Drumlion cemetery.

SPCA COLLECTION 

The Roscommon Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will hold a church gate collection at St. Michael's Church, Drumlion on Saturday, January 24th. Roscommon SPCA is run by a team of dedicated volunteers with all money donated going directly towards animal welfare in the county.
