Local Notes: Blood Bikes West visit, thanks from the  Keenehan family and summer camps

MICHAEL MORAN MEMORIAL GOLF SCRAMBLE 

A golf memorial four ball scramble will be held at Carrick-on-Shannon Golf Club on Saturday, June 28th, four person team fee of €200, tee from 11 a.m., includes green fees, food and donation to Hospice. This event is held each year in memory Michael Moran, Mantua who died in January 2023. Proceeds will go to Mayo Roscommon Hospice.

LATE MR TONY GIBLIN 

The death occurred peacefully on June 9th at Roscommon Hospice, surrounded by his loving family, of Mr Tony Giblin, Scurmore, Elphin, and formerly of Ardcola, Ballinameen. He was predeceased by his parents Michael and Mary Ellen. Tony will be sadly missed by his wife, Bernadette; daughters, Martina, Genevieve and Antoinette; sons-in-law Des and Ray; beloved grandchildren, Caoimhe, Nessa, Noah and Freya, as well as a wide circle of friends and neighbours. Following Mass of the Resurrection at St. Attracta's Church, Ballinameen on Thursday last Tony was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

LATE MRS BRIDIE COSTELLO 

The death occurred on June 12th, in her 86th year, peacefully, with her family by her side, in the loving care of all the staff at Sonas Innis Ree Nursing Home, Ballyleague of Mrs Bridie Costello (née Mulvee) Chapel Street, Elphin and late of Killeglan, Taughmaconnell. She was predeceased by her husband Pat, parents, Mary and Pat and brother-in-law John. Bridie will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her loving daughter, Olivia; sons, Padraig and Brendan; daughter-in-law, Lenore; adored grandchildren, Cillian, Alisha, Fionn, Aoibheann and Nóra; brothers, Tom and Pat; sister, Kathleen; sisters-in-law, Sheila and Mary; nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. Following Funeral Mass in St Patrick’s Church, Elphin on Monday morning Bridie was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

WOOL COLLECTION FOR HOSPICE

 It’s that time of year again – wool collection time for Hospice. Wool must be dry and clean. All proceeds go to Mayo Roscommon Hospice. Contact 086 8163429 for more information. Thank you to the local farmers who always support this great cause.

TOWER BAR SESSIONS 

The Tuesday night traditional music sessions in the Tower Inn, Elphin continue to provide a great entertainment and visiting musicians or followers will be made very welcome any Tuesday after 8 p.m.. June 29th is the date for the very popular singers’ session. All welcome.

BLOOD BIKES WEST VISIT

Abbeycartron NS was delighted to welcome Brian and Rossa from Blood Bikes West recently. They travelled from Galway to thank Abbeycartron for raising €733. The money came from the sale of Easter Chicks, which were kindly made by Anne Rock and Angela Rock. They explained how important this money is to the charity. All got time with "Cara" and "Hanorah" their motorbikes. Thanks to both men for the treats for Fourth and Fifth Class who were the sales team for this worthy cause.

SWIMMING CAMPS 

Irish Water safety swimming camp returns this July at Roscommon Leisure Centre, Monday July 14th to Friday, July 18th. Lesson 10:30 a.m./11:20 a.m. (5 X 50min lessons), ages six to 13 years. Bus departs Elphin Community Centre at 9:25 a.m. sharp, Bawn Street, Strokestown 9.45 a.m.. Return time Strokestown 12:05, Elphin 12:15. If interested please call 0871374931 to book a seat as numbers are limited MOBILE LIBRARY The mobile library is in Elphin (Main Street) every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3.30 p.m..

TENNIS LESSONS 

Tennis lessons available this summer in Kiltrustan and on into the Autumn. Lessons are available for children of school going age right up to teenagers for the first two weeks of August. The lessons will have small groupings, ideal for beginners and improvers. If enough interest is available, Saturday lessons will continue on into the Autumn. Building on from the successful tennis tournaments held during Covid, adult lessons are being considered if there is enough interest in building up the skills and fitness in a nice, relaxed atmosphere.  Line dancing with Shannon takes place in An Bothar Rua every Wednesday at 8 p.m.. It’s great fun and everyone is welcome.

The annual church gate collection in aid of the assisted pilgrim section of the diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place on Saturday, June 21st and Sunday, June 22nd at all churches in County Roscommon. This year 35 assisted pilgrims from the diocese will travel to Lourdes and all monies collected at church gates will be used to help defray the costs of this section of the pilgrimage. Please support this very worthy cause.

CROGHAN/DRUMLION/CORTOBER 

THANKS FROM KEENEHAN FAMILY 

The Keenehan family would like to thank Shannon Gaels GAA and LGFA, Croghan Community Café, Shauna Murtagh (Leitrim Rose 2024), ACC Boyle, the variety show and the local community for the support and participation in the events and fundraisers held in aid of "Dom's Wish". The support helped with the refurbishment of the family home in Sligo for Orla, Lachlan and Eden. A total of €17,810 was donated to the North West Hospice in Sligo by Orla. Thanks to everyone for making Dom's Wish possible.

INFORMATION EVENING IN PATRICIAN HALL 

An information evening on a new "Come Follow Me" Faith and Fun Club will be held in the Patrician Hall, Cortober on this Thursday, June 19th at 7.30 p.m.. Those facilitating the new club, which is aimed at 7-11 year olds. will be available to give further information.

MEMORY CAFÉ MEETINGS 

The monthly meeting of the Memory Café will take place at the Lough Key Forest Park on Wednesday, June 18th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and on July 16th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.. SUMMER CAMP 

Shannon Gaels GAA Club’s summer camp will take place from June 30th to July 4th in Pairc na nGael (Bullfield), Boyle Road, Carrick-on-Shannon. Activities will include games, GAA skills, arts and crafts. For details see the club's facebook page.

CE SCHEME VACANCIES 

Cavetown CE scheme has vacancies for general operatives. Duties will include the upkeep of all amenity areas, grass cutting, strimming, hedge trimming, litter and weed control, upkeep of flowerbeds and shrubs and landscaping.
