Local Notes: Busy season for Castlerea Crusaders Athletic Club juveniles, Cloonbonniffe auction and late Patsy Burke

Nial Tully from Tully’s Totalhealth Castlerea, has generously sponsored Castlerea Crusaders juvenile club this year and he launched the club's new updated athletic gear last week.

BUSY SEASON FOR CASTLEREA CRUSADERS ATHLETIC CLUB (AC) JUVENILES 

Castlerea Crusaders Athletic Club (AC) juveniles ended their busy outdoor season on Tuesday last at Tarmon NS running track with a visit from Nick’s Ices and Nial Tully. Nial from Tully’s Totalhealth Castlerea, has generously sponsored the club this year and he launched the club's new updated athletic gear. The juvenile outdoor season 2025 has been a very busy and successful one as the club welcomed new members to training and athletes took part in local athletics competitions. The club also had a number of juveniles competing in various events at the recent Connacht finals in Galway and Sligo with personal bests being achieved and even Connacht records being created. Five of the club’s athletes subsequently qualified for the national finals in sprint, long jump, shot putt and javelin. The juveniles now take a well-deserved break until August, but many of them are looking forward already to taking part in 'Run with the Roses ' fun run event on Sunday , July 27th at 9.30 a.m. starting at The Hub, which is being organised by Castlerea Crusaders Club in conjunction with Castlerea Rose Festival. The inaugural 'Run with the Roses' event has a timed 5km fun run for adults and 1km children’s run. Runners/ walkers may register on line at Eventbrite. The fee for adults is €10. The children's 1km run is free. Donations are welcome on the day. Children will receive participatory medals. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes for male and female adult winners. Refreshments will be served afterwards.

SPCA COLLECTION 

Roscommon SPCA will be holding its annual collection at the following churches over the weekend of July 5th & 6th: St. Patrick's Church, Castlerea on both Saturday 5th and Sunday, July 6th; Trien Church on Sunday, July 6th and Cloonbonniffe Church on Sunday, July 6th. Roscommon SPCA charity is run by a team of dedicated volunteers with all money donated going directly towards animal welfare in the county. GOLF LOTTO 

The winning bonus ball number in Castlerea Golf Club’s lotto for June 25th was number 6. Winners of this week’s lotto were Kathleen Hester, Brid Kilgannon, Thomas Hester, Maggie Lyons, and Sean Kilkenny. Each receive €100.

LOURDES DEANERY 

Members of the Castlerea Lourdes Deanery committee will be out and about in the coming week selling tickets for a fundraising draw, which will help defray the cost of bringing assisted pilgrims on this year’s pilgrimage to Lourdes. It costs €850 to bring an assisted pilgrim to Lourdes. As this is the committee’s first fundraising event since Covid your support would be appreciated. Also, if anyone would like to help with the selling of the tickets, please contact PRO Danny Burke on 087 0988559. Tickets are €5 each or a book of 3 for €10. First prize is €500; 2nd, €200; 3rd, €100 sponsored by Michael Jury Carpet; 4th, Air Fryer, sponsored by Joe Pearl; 5th, 20 litres of oil, sponsored by Corrib Oil; 6th, hamper sponsored by Kearney’s Chemist; 7th, €30, sponsored by Liam Reynolds. The committee would like to thank all the sponsors of the prizes. The draw will take place in Mulvihill’s, Castlerea, on Saturday, August 9th.

The recent church gate collection taken up in Castlerea, Cloonbonniffe and Trien, which will help defray the cost of bringing assisted pilgrims to Lourdes on this year’s pilgrimage, realised the following: Castlerea, €815l Cloonbonniffee, €257.90, Trien, €160. The Castlerea Lourdes Deanery Committee would like to thank all who subscribed and a special thank you to the following who helped to take up the collection in such wet conditions, Bridie Ryan, Bernie Egan, Noel Winston, Noel Nolan, Joe Pearl, Jane Byron, Dermot Mulvihill, Paddy Duignan, Danny Burke and Lilly Connell. Thanks to the priests in the parish, and Rita Fleming in the parish office.

CLOONBONNIFFE AUCTION 

All roads lead to Cloonbonniffe on Sunday, July 6th for the annual auction, which starts at 2 p.m. on the Cloonbonniffe NS grounds. Items for sale include furniture, hardware, turf, books, plants, bric-a-brac, fancy goods. There will be a raffle on the day. Tea and snacks served all day. Please come along and sample Bridie Ryan and Kathleen Wall’s lovely scones. All sold items must be take away on the day of the auction. Items sold as seen. No cars/dogs allowed in school yard for health and safety reasons. No outside traders allowed. Joe Ryan will again be master of ceremonies, and he appeals for patrons to come early and get a good bargain, so don’t be disappointed.

CLOONBONNIFFE 200 CLUB DRAW RESULTS 

 Recent Cloonbonniffe 200 Club draw results were: €100, Annie and Jason Kelly, Gorthaganny; €25, Rachel Mullholland, Taughnara, and Katie Kelly, Culmore.

LATE MR PATSY BURKE 

The death occurred peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, June 14th of Mr Patrick (Patsy) Burke, Carrowshee Avenue, Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh and formerly of St. Patrick Street, Castlerea. Deceased was a member of a highly respected and long established Castlerea family. With his wife, Margaret, he ran a successful bar business, The Horse and Jockey in Castlerea for many years. Patsy was a keen sportsman in his youth and played Gaelic football and soccer. He was also a keen golfer with Castlerea Golf Club. He was on the Castlerea juvenile U-15 and minor teams beaten in the 1957 county finals. He was a member of the Tarmon junior team that won the West Board Championship in 1963. His late father, Pa, was a top musician who played with the great Teddy Mac showband and also a member of the Castlerea Brass and Reed band for many years. He won county junior championships with Tarmon in 1929 and 1933. Patsy was a great family person and he will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Margaret (nee Hall); his loving family Ann (Padraig), David (Lorraine) and Alan (Sharon); grandchildren, Sarah-Jane, Chloe, Katie-Ann; Saoirse, Eala and Cora; loving brother of Maura Naughton (John RIP), Cloghen, County Roscommon. His remains were removed from his home to Holy Cross Church, Lisnaskea and after the funeral Mass, burial took place in the adjoining cemetery. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
