‘A Meitheal for our time - Together we tend tomorrow’ is being held at Roscommon Agricultural Show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 15th.
Roscommon Town Decarbonising Zone (DZ) is a climate initiative to gather communities and individuals together to develop projects in support of halting biodiversity loss, reducing carbon emissions and adapting to the effects of climate change.
The DZ expo at Roscommon Agricultural show, will explore the theme of “Heritage at Risk” and the public are invited to attend talks and demonstrations on the threats to our way of life posed by the effects of climate change, how we can address them and how you can get involved. Experts will be available to give advice, discuss projects & signpost how you can take part in securing a climate-ready future.
11.00– 12.00- Biodiversity & Nature based solutions in Roscommon Town: See how simple, practical measures can support biodiversity and water quality. The Local Authority Waters Programme will be on hand with demo's & the RCC Biodiversity Officer will outline how the Local Biodiversity Plan, National Pollinator initiatives & traditional maintenance methods promote biodiversity in the DZ.
13.00 – 15.00 - Demonstration Kitchen - Reducing food waste and eating more sustainably:
A local chef & educator will give a talk and demo of how we can reduce our carbon footprint & reduce food waste while improving our nutrition. Not to be missed!
15.00 – 16.00 - Energy Efficiency & Retrofits in Heritage Buildings: Conservation experts will give an outline of key considerations in the sensitive retrofit of heritage buildings. Info will be available on SEAI, Vacant Homes and Living Over the Shop schemes.
Experts will be available all day to answer questions and give advice, along with a range of engaging information and stands.
Judging in the national Tidy Towns Competition is ongoing for August. Roscommon Town is at Gold Medal status in the competition, and the volunteers are aiming to retain and increase the points this year. The Tidy Towns volunteers encourage residents and business owners to play their part by maintaining their property. The volunteers meet every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the car park opposite the Garda Station. Everyone is welcome.
A new four week block of fun exercise classes, Smooth Movers, is underway at the Lisnamult Sports Centre with a mixture of seated/standing/walking/flexing/dance, lots of fun and laughs, all gentle and suitable for everyone, all welcome. Text Bonnie 0872238237 to book your place.
The Family Resource Centre is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help run a friendly chess club. Whether you’re an experienced player or simply passionate about the game, your time and encouragement can make a real difference. No teaching qualification is required—just patience, enthusiasm, and a love of chess. If you’d like to volunteer or would like more information, the Family Resource Centre would love to hear from you.

Cemetery Mass will be celebrated in St. Coman’s Cemetery on Saturday, August 15th at 7 p.m. and in Cloontuskert Cemetery on Sunday, August 10th at 6 p.m..
Balance bikes are available to loan from Roscommon Library. Balance bikes are a fantastic way to help young children develop balance, confidence, and coordination, giving them the perfect start on their cycling journey before moving on to pedals. Global school feeding charity Mary’s Meals is holding its annual Step by Step to Feed the Next Child - Walk to Knock. Walkers will arrive in Roscommon Town around 4.30 p.m. on this Wednesday, August 12th on their way to Knock and leave at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday, August 13th. Please come out and encourage the walkers, and if you are able to do so, donate in the buckets or visit marysmeals.ie to donate online. It costs just €22 to feed a child for a whole school year, and 11c provides one school meal. All donations, big or small, are very welcome.
The annual jumble/cake sale in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital will be held at Roscommon Agricultural Show on Saturday, August 15th. Donations of saleable items, toys, ornaments etc. much appreciated. Contact Bridget on 087 9773338.
Born and raised in Moher, Ballyleague, UK based professional storyteller, poet and author Gerry Donlon aka Bards Aloud, has an array of original and ‘hybrid’ tales, described as “stories comic and stories quirky” suitable for both children and adults.
His first book Magic & Wonder Anthology 1 is six original family friendly stories set in Suffolk and was published November 2025.
His second book Comic & Quirky Anthology 2 is suitable for 12-year-olds and upwards. There are eight original stories, some weird, some strange, some comic, some quirky, and most set in counties Roscommon and Sligo.
Gerry has performed at festivals in England and Ireland.
Gerry will be in Roscommon Library today, Tuesday, August 11th from 6 p.m. to tell some of his tales and launch his new book. All are most welcome.
Congratulations are extended to Mark Gunning, Ballymacurley and Steph Patterson, County Tyrone who were married on Saturday, August 1st. Congratulations are also extended to James Shannon, Carane and Caitriona Devine, Clashaganny who were married on Friday last. Wishing both couples many years of health and happiness.
