Local Notes: Card Winners, Hospice donation and Healing Mass

By virtue of their participation in the Dublin's Women Mini-Marathon on May 31st members of the extended family of the late Tom and the late Maureen Kenny, Corroclough, Kiltoom, raised €10,400 by way of sponsorship for Roscommon-Mayo Hospice. The cheque was presented to Martina Jennings of Roscommon-Mayo Hospice at Roscommon Hospice on Wednesday, September 9th. The group of 15 was comprised of Mary Kenny Cunniffe, Sarah Cunniffe, Geraldine Kenny, Jayne Kenny, Caoimhe Kenny, Saoirse Kenny, Caraiosa Kenny, Anne Higgins, Megan Higgins, Irene Kenny, Lucy Fleming, Sally Fleming, Rose Fleming, Catherine Kenny and Millie O'Brien. Ms Jennings returned thanks to the group for their participation in the marathon and raising much needed funds for Roscommon-Mayo Hospice. The co-ordinator of the group was Jayne Kenny, Mount Temple, a grandchild of the late Tom and the late Maureen Kenny.
The winners of the weekly progressive 25 card drive at St Brigid's Handball Complex in Curraghboy, which resumed following the summer break on Tuesday, September 15th, were Marian Dunning, Enda McHugh, Marian Kelly, Mark Doyle, Johnny Hughes, Mary Duignan, John McHugh, Patricia Staunton, Gerry Menton, Sean Gately and Eamon Ward.
The Drum ICA Guild will host a coffee morning at Drum Community Centre in aid of Hospice on this Thursday, September 24th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.. The support of the general public would be greatly appreciated.
There will be Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at St Brigid's Church, Curraghboy, on this Friday evening, September 25th, at 7 p.m..
MS Ireland is hosting a free information fair for people with MS and other neurological conditions and their carers in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon, on this Thursday, September 24th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. A special Healing Mass will take place at Our Lady Star of the Sea Prayer Centre, Curraghboy on Thursday, October 1st (Feast of St. Therese of Lisieux) commencing at 8 p.m. The celebrant will be Fr. John Keane. Confessions will be available from 6.30 p.m. and the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet will be recited at 7.30 p.m. Fr. John will bless holy water and all religious items after Mass. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and individual blessings for healing will take place after Mass. Refreshments will be available afterwards. All are most welcome. Eircode is N37W704.
The death took place on Friday, September 4th, at the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore, of Mrs Lena Cunnane, Brittas, Glasson, who was the former Ms Lena Butler, Curry, Brideswell. Aged 99 on February 21st last, she was a general nurse by profession and she was attached to the staff of a London Hospital for some years after taking up residence in London in the late forties. She met her husband, the late Michael Cunnane of Keelogues, Ballyvarry, County Mayo in London and they were married at St Alba's Church, London, in the late forties. Both herself and Michael, returned to the Irish midlands in the mid-fifties and he took up employment with Bord Na Mona and they resided at Cam, Brideswell, Ferbane, and Kilcormac, before taking up residence at Brittas, Glasson in 1961. Devoted to her immediate and extended family, she was an excellent homemaker, who was skilful at cooking, baking, knitting and sewing. She also enjoyed gardening and reading as hobbies. Noted for her sense of neighbourliness in her residential catchment, she was also a reliable and trustworthy friend to all those who made her acquaintance. A religious person, she was a regular visitor to Knock Shrine over the decades and supported a range of charitable causes and bequests. She was predeceased by her husband Michael on August 12th, 2007, and is survived by one daughter, Mrs Kathleen McGuinness, Clara, County Offaly; sons, Michael, London; Kevin, Brittas; Terry, Duleek; Jimmy, Brittas and Paddy, Brittas. The last surviving member of a farming family of two boys and two girls, she is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Concelebrated Mass at Tubberclaire Church on Monday, September 7th, the burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.
Mrs Phil Coyle, Corralea, Curraghboy, has been bereaved by the death of her uncle, Mr Bertie Fallon, Toberdan, Lecarrow, which took place at the Sacred Heart Care Home, Roscommon, on September 3rd last. The deceased was aged 92 and he had been an employee of Chadwicks in Athlone for a number of years up until his retirement. Devoted to his immediate and extended family, he was synonymous with the soccer scene in Rahara and St John's for many years and he was also a playing member of Roscommon Golf Club. Predeceased a number of years by his wife Nora (nee Boyle), he is survived by sons, Martin and Hubert and daughters, Margaret, Patricia, Jo, Noreen, Olive and Sarah. He is also survived by one sister, Margaret; 13 grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at St John's Church, Lecarrow, on Monday, September 7th, the burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.
Line dancing classes will resume at the St Brigid's Handball Complex, Currraghboy, on Monday, September 28th. The classes for beginners commence at 7 p.m. and the regular class is at 8.15 pm. All are welcome. Meanwhile, the Luan Academy of Irish Dance will hold classes at the St Brigid's GAA Complex, Newpark, Kiltoom, on Mondays from 5.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m..
