Local Notes: Community Games, Family Fun Day, Guided Tour

Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke on a visit to the McGahern Barracks, Cootehall on Friday last with Michael Cryan (chairperson McGahern Barracks Museum), Peter Griffin, Laura Burke, Brian Reynolds(development advisor to the Barracks) Tony Bambrick and Senator Gareth Scahill.

COMMUNITY GAMES 

The Roscommon Community Games athletics finals took place at St. Faithleach’s GAA grounds in Ballyleague on Saturday, May 30th last. Congratulations to Chloe McKenna (bronze medal winner in 1500m), Aodhán Creaton (fourth in 800m), Ella Cullinan, Aobhín McKenna, Fiadh McDermott Kayla Cullinan, Keeva O’Gara, Isla Hennessy Mia Moran, Mya Cullinan, Tadgh Fleming, Tadhg McCarthy and Dara McKenna who represented Douglas Hyde Community Games with distinction. Many thanks to all the parents who travelled to Ballyleague with their children on the day.

LATE MR PADRAIC NOLAN 

The death occurred suddenly at his home, on Wednesday, May 20th last, of Mr Padraic Nolan, Lisnagard, Elphin, brother of Dolores O’Connor, Frenchpark. Padraic (63) is also survived by his sisters, Mary and Matilda; brother, Marty; extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends. His remains were removed from Brady’s Funeral Home, Elphin to The Church of the Holy Trinity, Kilmaryal on Friday week last. Following Requiem Mass on Saturday, May 23rd last, Padraic was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

LATE MRS DORA MULDOON

Mrs Dora Muldoon, Shrule County Mayo and formerly of Lissergool, Tibohine passed away suddenly, at her residence, on Friday, May 22nd last. Predeceased by her parents, John and Winifred Lavin, brothers, John, Pat and Frank and sisters, Kathleen, Rita and Mary. The late Mrs Muldoon (née Lavin) is deeply regretted by her loving husband, John; daughters, Deirdre & Sinéad; son-in-law Ciarán; grandchildren Éanna & Aoife; brother-in-law, Fr. Christy; sister-in-law, Mary; nieces and nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends. His remains were removed to St. Joseph's Church, Shrule for Funeral Mass on Monday, May 25th last. Burial took place afterwards in Shrule Cemetery.

CHURCH NEWS 

Masses will be held in Ballinagare Church at 8.30 p.m. on Saturday (7th ) and in Fairymount at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday, June 7th. There will be Masses in Tibohine and Frenchpark next weekend. Fr. Micheál Donnelly will be away until Friday, June 12th next. Emergency calls only to Fr. John McManus in Castlerea on 094-9620020.

WEDDING 

Congratuations to Tommie Devine, Frenchpark and Jen Mahon, County Sligo who were married in St. Adaman’s Church, Skreen on Saturday, May 30th last. The celebrant was Fr. Patrick Devine. The wedding reception was held at the Diamond Coast Hotel in Enniscrone. The newly weds are wished a long and happy married life together.

LOTTO 

Western Gaels held its weekly lottery draw on Saturday, May 30th last. There was no jackpot winner. The numbers drawn were 12, 14, 29 and 32. Cash prize winners (€20 each) were Bernie/Ger Eustace, Tony Gilligan, John Gray, Kevin Murray and Mairead Philips/Michael White. Cash prize winners in the annual lotto tickets draw (€100 each) were Colleen/Ursula/Conor Cooney, Trevor/ Olivia Farrell, Jack Freeman, Charlie Kenny and Ronan Kilcommons. The next draw (jackpot €3,900) will take place at the clubhouse in Frenchpark on this Saturday, June 6th. Tickets are available on-line through the Clubforce app or from local outlets.

FAMILY FUN DAY 

Tibohine NS has announced that in partnership with Sunflower Children’s Hospice "Tractors & Tea", the highly anticipated Motor/Tractor Run and Family Fun Day, is returning to Tibohine Community Centre on Sunday, June 14th next. Registration from 8 a.m.. Children’s entertainment from 12 noon and vehicles to depart at 1.30 p.m.. To start off the fundraising, there are some amazing raffle prizes on offer. Win two weekend camping tickets for as little as €3 to the "Night & Day" Festival in Boyle. Further details are available on Tibohine NS Facebook page.

SUMMER CAMPS

TOURISM MINISTER VISITS MCGAHERN BARRACKS 

McGahern Barracks chairperson Mike Cryan and barracks volunteers Laura Burke, Tony Bambrick and Peter Griffin welcomed Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Bourke and Senator Gareth Scahill on Friday evening last as they made a brief visit to the John McGahern Barracks in Cootehall. The visitors were given an overview of the main themes and the aspirations for the future. Possible funding routes were discussed to ultimately provide a full-time resource that would ensure greater visitor access together with an increased community presence.

VOLUNTEER TOUR GUIDES NEEDED 

Are you retired /have the time to volunteer as an occasional tour guide at the McGahern Barracks, Cootehall and are interested in one of Ireland’s greatest writers? Then please contact Peter Griffin, on 086 1539699.

GUIDED TOUR 

The next guided tour of John McGahern’s places of interest takes place on Saturday, June 6th. Meet up at the McGahern Barracks Museum in Cootehall (F52YD92) at 10 a.m. with the tour starting at 10.30 a.m. and visiting places of interest from McGahern’s writings including Fenagh, Ballinamore, Aughawillan and Keshcarrigan. The tour lasts approximately 3.5 hours and is accompanied and narrated by local historian and creative director of the museum, Tom Inglis. Cost is €70/person and tickets are limited to 14 places. KILRONAN CEMETERY CLEAN UP 

A clean up of Kilronan Cemetery will take place this evening June 2nd from 7-9 p.m.. Voluntary help is needed as there are no schemes available. Please bring strimmers as the grass is getting very high. If this time does not suit come when you are available even for a short time. It is important to keep the resting place of loved ones tidy, particularly in the older part of the cemetery when there is no longer family to do any work.

RSPCA COLLECTIONS 

The Roscommon Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will hold church gate collections at the following churches over the weekend of June 6th & 7th - St. Patrick's Church, Crossna on Saturday, June 6th; St. Patrick's Church, Drumboylan on Sunday, June 7th and St. Therese's Church, Corrigeenroe on Sunday, June 7th. Roscommon SPCA is run by a team of dedicated volunteers with all money donated going directly towards animal welfare in the county.

Judging of Tidy Town is underway. There is still time for residents to carry out improvement works i.e. painting of some houses and boundary walls etc. Thanks to all the people who have given of their time, tidying and weeding in Heritage Park .Thanks again to all the residents for your help over the years.
