SENIOR CLUB PANELS REACH COUNTY SEMI-FINALS

Two of South Roscommon's premier GAA club’s senior panels are through to the Hodson Bay county senior semi-finals this coming week-end. Padraig Pearse’s (Moore-Creagh-Taughmaconnell) reached the final by notching up a comprehensive victory over Michael Glavey's in extra time in the quarter final played in Roscommon on Saturday, September 19th, while St. Brigid's recorded a decisive victory over Roscommon Gaels in the quarter final played at Woodmount on Sunday, September 20th. The Padraig Pearse’s GAA Club was founded in 1962 and its senior panel have taken home a Connacht Club Championship title and two senior county titles over the past eight years. St Brigid's (Kiltoom-Cam-Curraghboy) was founded in 1944 and its senior panel brought the only All Ireland club senior title to County Roscommon in 2013 by virtue of their defeat of Ballymun Kickhams in the final on St Patrick's Day in Croke Park. Pearse’s will clash with Boyle in the semi-final and Brigid's will take on Strokestown.

FAMILY REUNION 

A family reunion is being organised at the Athlone Springs hotel from October 8th to 12th for the ancestors of Evers/Ivers/Eivers/Perkinson families originating in Lissoy/Kiltoom. The hotel can be contacted for details or you can attend the meet and greet in the hotel on the 8th from 3 p.m.. The event is being organised by Susan Southward from Manchester. Her great, great grandfather was John Evers from Lissoy on her mother's side. A previous reunion, much larger,  was held in 2015 at the Hodson Bay. This year between 70 to 80 people are expected from America, England and Ireland. There will be a family meal on the Sunday at the hotel after attendance at Mass at the Church of the Risen Christ, Kiltoom and paying respects to Frank Eivers at his memorial opposite the church and a  visit to Kiltoom Cemetery.

HOSPICE FUNDRAISER

A Coffee Morning for Hospice will take place at the St Brigid's Handball Complex in Curraghboy on Sunday, October 4th, after the 10 a.m. Mass in St Brigid's Church, Curraghboy. The support of the general public would be greatly appreciated.

PET BLESSING 

Irish Guide dogs for the Blind will hold its annual "Pet Blessing " on Saturday , October 10th at 3.30 p.m. at St. Peters and Paul's Church, Athlone.  All welcome.

BALLINASLOE FAIR LECTURE 

Historian Steve Dolan will deliver an illustrated lecture titled ‘Snapshots of Ballinasloe Fair and Galway Life from Newspaper Reports, 1750–2000’ as part of this year’s Ballinasloe Fair & Festival. The talk explores the history of Europe’s oldest and largest horse fair, tracing its development from a major livestock mart to the renowned fair of today, using contemporary newspaper accounts. The lecture takes place at Gullane’s Hotel on Tuesday, October 6th at 8 p.m.. All are welcome.

LATE MR GERARD DUNNE 

The death took place on Sunday, September 6th, at his residence of Mr Gerard (Gerry) Dunne, Togher, Taughmaconnell. Aged 82 in March last, he was a native of Bailiboro, County Cavan, and he was a well-known building contractor who was much in demand for his skills and all round competence in that work arena. Devoted to his immediate and extended family, he was a most obliging neighbour and trustworthy friend. A sports enthusiast, he was an accomplished golfer and a follower of all Dublin GAA panels. He also enjoyed gardening as his main hobby. He took a keen interest in current affairs always and was an engaging conversationalist on a one to one basis. He is survived by his wife Eileen (nee Finnegan, Brittas, Dublin); sons, Christopher, Togher; Paul, Carroreagh, Taughmaconnell; daughters, Mrs Patricia Madden, Castlerea and Mrs Rosemary Phelan, Cloonbigney, Taughmaconnell. He is also survived by one brother, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at St Ronan's Church, Taughmaconnell, on Wednesday, September 9th, the burial took place in Taughmaconnell Cemetery. The celebrant of the Mass was Very Rev. Sean Neylon, PP, Taughmaconnell.

LATE MRS CHRISTINE BARRY 

The death took place at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, on Thursday, September 10th, of Mrs Christine Barry, Forest Mill, Bealnamullia, Athlone. Aged 82, she was the former Ms Chrstine King, Belturbet, County Cavan, and she had been residing in retirement at Forest Mill for the past 18 years. She operated a licensed premises in Bedford, England, for a number of years alongside her late husband Chris and they were noted for their business acumen, tact and discretion in all their dealings with the general public. Devoted to her immediate and extended family, she was noted for her sense of neighbourliness in her residential catchment. An excellent homemaker, she was skilful at knitting, sewing, cooking and baking. She also enjoyed walking and gardening as her main hobbies. She was predeceased by her husband Chris in 2008 and was also predeceased by her brothers Joe, Tommy, Eddie and Terry. She is survived by one son Brian, Anglesea; daughter, Mrs Amanda Mulvey, Bealnamullia; four grandchildren, one great grandchild, sister, Mrs Bridie Byrnes, Northampton, England; nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at Ss Peter and Paul, Athlone, on Tuesday, September 15th, the burial took place in Drum Cemetery.

BEREAVED 

Mrs Jacinta Dolan, Ballybay, Kiltoom, has been bereaved by the death of her mother, Mrs Esther Barclay, Roslevin Lawn, Athlon, which took place on Wednesday, September 16th. Aged 75 in January last, she was the former Ms Esther Lennon, St Anne's Terrace, Athlone. She had been in ill health for some time and she bore her illness with characteristic fortitude. She had been an employee of the Athlone Woolen Mills for a number of years prior to marriage. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she performed innumerable neighbourly deeds and kind acts in the course of her life. An excellent homemaker, she was skilful at knitting, sewing, baking and cooking. She also enjoyed reading and gardening as her main hobbies. She is survived by her husband Harry; daughters, Mrs Jacinta Dolan; Hazel, Baylough and Mrs Elaine Nestor, Mount Temple. She is also survived by one brother, Brendan, Beechlawn Drive, Monksland; sons-in-law, Aidan and Mark; five grandchildren and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at St Mary's Church, Athlone, on Saturday, September 19th, the burial took place in Coosan Cemetery.

CARD DRIVE WINNERS 

The winners of the weekly progressive 25 card drive at the St Brigid's Handball Complex in Curraghboy on Tuesday night last were Mrs Sarah Seery, Alfie Gately, Mrs Marian Grehan, Gerry Menton, Johnny Hughes, Mrs Edel Coyle, Mrs Mary Doyle, Michael Doyle, Mrs Marian Kell, Mrs Patricia Staunton, Sean Gately, Mrs Bernadette Burke, Mrs Marian Lynch, Padraig Harney and Cllr Tony Ward.
