ST. VINCENT DE PAUL COLLECTION

The annual St. Vincent de Paul church gate collection will be taken up at Castlerea, Clooonbonniffe, Trien, Ballymoe and Ballintubber churches on Saturday and Sunday, December 6th & 7th . The society members who are all volunteers do trojan work during the year looking after people and paying them visits in their homes. There are big demands on their funds especially at this time of the year. They would like to thank the general public for their support and donations over the years, which is very much appreciated. Please give what you can afford.

JOYOUS REFRAINS AT TRINITY ARTS CENTRE

 Trinity Arts Centre presents Joyous Refrains with Castlerea Community Choir in Trinity Arts Centre on Saturday, December 13th at 7 p.m.. This is a performance of seasonal songs and Christmas carols. Admission €10. Tickets on sale in Bennys or call or text booking line on 087 4027175.

GOLF LOTTO

 The winning bonus ball number in Castlerea Golf Club’s lotto for November 26th was number 9. Winners of this week’s lotto were Aiden Mulvihill, Vince Finan, Ignatius Darcy, Bridie Ryan, and James Flanagan. Each receive €100.

BAND NEWS 

 The Castlerea Brass and Reed Band will be out and about in the lead up to Christmas performing their Christmas carols and they will be also selling tickets at Mace, Barrack Street, on Friday, December 5th for a Christmas hamper to help defray the cost of the upkeep of the band. In the past number of weeks on each Monday night, the band, under music director Niamh O’Flanagan and Seamus Ward, have been holding classes to recruit new members and through their efforts the band will have at least six new members in the New Year. The band are always looking for new members so if you would like to join, contact any band member. Providing instruments and uniforms costs so please support the hamper draw. The band will visit Aras Mathair Pol and Fearna Manor Nursing Home on Sunday, December 7th.

SCHOOL FOOTBALL 

The Castlerea Community School senior team defeated Drumshanbo in the Connacht Colleges Division D Championship at O’Rourke Park on Wednesday, November 19th on the score of 3-16 to 3-12. Team and scorers: Jack Dolan, Kevin Murray, Cian Fitzmaurice, Joseph Botten, Eddie Finneran, James Hawkshaw 1-1, Tadgh Donlon, Jamie Dowd 0-1, Dara Curran 0-4, Oisin Fleming, Kevin Hester 1-5, Ryan Dunleavy, Tylar Waldron 0-1, Sean Vaughan 1-3, Martin Sharkey 0-1. Team manager: Conor Hussey. On Wednesday, November 25th they were defeated by Ballygar in Ballygar on the score of 4-15 to 1-7.

LATE MR PATRICK SWIFT 

The death occurred peacefully recently in the UK of Mr Patrick (Paddy) Swift of Church Road, Castlerea. He was a member of a highly respected Church Road and Castlerea family. As a young man he left Castlerea to seek employment in the UK but he never lost touch with his native Castlerea and always kept in contact with his parents and family. He was a great character, always very jolly and had great time for people, both young and old and loved to have the chat with them. He was brother of the late Louise O’Brien, Castlehill, Castlerea and of Castlerea’s greatest character the late John Swift, Church Road. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Burial took place in the UK. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

LATE MRS ESTER SCHRODER 

 The death occurred peacefully in the UK of Mrs Ester Schroder (nee Hayden), Worcestershire and formerly of Church Road, Castlerea, sister of Mrs Peggy Cunningham, Rampark, Castlerea. Deceased was a very king, gentle and jolly person. She was a member of a highly respected Church Road and Castlerea family who were always great neighbours. Like many she left home as a young girl to work in the UK. She always kept in touch with her family and used to come and visit them. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Burial will take place in the UK. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

LATE MRS NELL GANNON 

 The death occurred peacefully at Laurel Lodge Nursing Home, Longford on Sunday, November 23rd of Mrs Nell (Eileen) Gannon (nee McCormack) of ‘Wyndcrest’, Ballindrimley, Castlerea. Predeceased by her husband Gerard. She was a great family person and adored her grandchildren. She loved the game of bridge and looked forward to meeting her friends at the weekly game. During her working life she spent nine years in the Clarence Hotel, Dublin. It was there she met her late husband, Gerard. After marrying they moved west. Later, Nell, with her sister Kay took charge of the Marian Hotel, Roosky. Nell was a long-time member of Castlerea Bridge Club. She was also involved with the town twinning committee. She gave generously of her time to meals on wheels. She had a great gift and talent for baking and cooking. She had great devotion to Knock Shrine where she visited on a regular basis. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and she will be sadly missed by her sons, Francis, Alan and Anthony; brother, John; daughters-in-law, grandchildren, sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Her remains were removed from Gaynor’s Funeral Home, Castlerea on Tuesday evening to St. Patrick’s Church, Castlerea and following Requiem Mass on Wednesday morning celebrated by Fr. John McManus, burial took place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Castlerea,. The Communion reflection was read by Fr. John McManus. The ceremony was enhanced by the music and singing of Jacqueline Kenny. May her Nell’s gentle soul rest in peace.

HARVEST PARTY THANKS 

A huge thank you to everyone who attended the annual Harvest Party in Kilmurry Hall on Sunday, November 9th. It was a fantastic day filled with fun, music, and community spirit. Special thanks to Canon Devine for celebrating Mass, to Peppermill Roscommon for beautiful food, Mark Finn for providing the music, to the hardworking committee and everyone who helped on the day. Special thanks to everyone who baked or donated spot prizes for the raffle. Thanks to the sponsors, without them the event could not go ahead, Roscommon County Council Social Inclusion Fund, Castlerea Credit Union, Roscommon Public Participation Network, an anonymous donation, Dec’s Bar, Castlerea Mart and TRA Professional Services Tax Advisors. MONTHLY DANCE 

The Christmas dance in Kilmurry Hall will take place on Sunday, December 7th with music by Steve Reilly. Dancing from 8p.m. to 10p.m. Admission €10. Come along for a great night of dancing.
