Local Notes: Mass of Remembrance, Trad Night, Back to School

A Mass of Remembrance will be held on Tuesday, September 1st at 7.p.m. in Ring 1 at Castlerea Mart. This special Mass is part of the mart’s 50th anniversary celebrations. All are invited to attend. The Mass can also be viewed online on the MartBids App. Refreshments will be served afterwards.
Congratulations are extended to Mr Colm Hannelly, Riverside, Galway, who celebrated his 97th birthday on Tuesday, August 11th at home with his family and friends. Over the years Colm has been a regular visitor to his native Castlerea and only last year he paid a visit on the eve of his 96th birthday. He is in good form and keeps in touch with his great friends Eamon Campion, Brian Stenson, John Murphy and Danny Burke. He was very involved with the great Tarmon club in his younger days. He is a great historian and in 1982 he published a book of Roscommon Sporting Records from 1971 to 1982 and has an up-to-date record of all the sporting events that has happened in the county of Roscommon since 1982. He also wrote the history of the Tarmon, Castlerea and Castlerea St. Kevin’s GAA Clubs from 1884 to 2010, which was launched in 2010. He also has the history of St. Kevin’s from 2010 to the present day. Castlerea minor club PRO Danny Burke would like to wish Colm a happy birthday on behalf of all in the club and wishes him many more in the years ahead, stating that the club has been so lucky to have such a gentleman as Colm who has produced all club records over the years.

The Castlerea Brass and Reed Band performed in Aughamore, County Mayo on Friday, August 14th for a fundraiser for the Mayo/Roscommon Children’s Hospice. They gave a great performance. On Sunday, August 30th they will perform at the annual Mass in St. Joseph’s Cemetery at 12 noon for all the deceased.
All roads lead to Mulvihill’s in Castlerea on Sunday, August 30th for the monthly trad session with Terry McGowan and his team of musicians. There will also be some special guest singers on the night. Come early.
The death occurred of Mr John Lyons, Tarmon Road, Castlerea on Saturday, August 15th, unexpectedly, but peacefully, at Sligo University Hospital. Predeceased by his parents, Bob and Nora, brother Michael and sister Mary. Deceased was a kind, gentle, jolly, good humoured and witty person. He was a member of a highly respected family and always had time for people. John worked hard all his life and was a very successful businessman. As a young man he went to England and after several years he returned to Dublin where he worked with Arnotts and Switzer’s in the carpet and furniture business. He was very well liked by his employers and work colleagues. He later ran his own business in Lucan and Castlerea, now Kearney’s Chemist on the Market Square. He loved to travel to different countries and would always share his travels with his many friends. He was a member of the Saturday morning breakfast club for over 30 years and with his friends Eamon Campion, Kieran Madigan, John Murphy, Tom Goodwin, Fr. John McManus, and Gerry Flanagan, just to mention a few, they would discuss many topics. He was also a member of the Gerry Beirne Joinery Rambling House Club where many current affairs discussions took place, better than the Today Tonight programme. He also had a great interest in sport and at underage level was a handy Gaelic footballer. He was a member of the Castlerea juvenile team beaten in the 1957 county final. He was a great supporter of Roscommon and Mayo football teams and was very proud of Mayo’s All Ireland win. His late dad Bob was a Ballyhaunis man. The Lyons family gave great service to Castlerea St. Kevin’s, John’s brother Demot won four county senior championships in 1967/68/71/73, his nephew Dermot (jnr) won three county championships in 2003/08/09. He had a great interest in gardening and took great pride in his garden, especially his flowers. He was a great community person and never failed to donate sponsorship to events in the town and surrounds. He was also a man of great faith. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Rose; son, Paul; daughters, Tanya and Ciara; sisters, Irene, Margaret and Dympna; brothers, Tom and Dermot; grandchildren, Holly and James; daughter-in-law, Lara; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends. His remains were removed from his home to St. Patrick’s Church, Castlerea and following Mass of the Resurrection celebrated by Fr. John McManus burial took place in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The ceremony was enhanced by the music and singing of the Castlerea Church combined choirs with organist Ena Conry and their beautiful rendering of ‘Our Lady of Knock’ was excellent. May John’s gentle soul rest in peace.

The winning bonus ball number in Castlerea Golf Club’s lotto for August 19th was 43. Winners of this week’s lotto were Anthony Cahill, Tom Callaghan, Michael Clarke, Nigel McHugh, and Paddy Mannion. Each receive €100.
The Lake O’Flynn & District Angling Association has announced the return of the Campbell Perpetual Cup to the club’s summer events calendar. This year's competition will be fished on Sunday, August 30th. The Campbell Cup has long been a feature event and has a long history and association with the club going back to the 1970s. The club is looking forward to running this event in association with the Forde family, Ballinlough who have kindly offered to be the main sponsors of this competition. This is a heaviest fish fly fishing event and has an excellent prize fund on offer. Fishing will be from 11 a.m.- 6 p.m. with the presentation of prizes and refreshments served in Campbell’s Lake 0’Flynn Lounge, Ballinlough afterwards. As the Summer holidays draw to a close, best wishes to all students and teachers returning to the classrooms this coming week. In particular, good luck to all Junior Infants starting big school, all First Year students starting secondary school and all Leaving Cert students moving onto the next chapter after receiving their results last Friday.
