Local Notes: Milestone birthday celebrated

Colm Hannelly recently celebrated his 96th birthday with family and friends.
The Castlerea St. Kevins Club would like to extend congratulations to Colm Hannelly, 1 Crescent View Riverside, Galway, who celebrated his 96th birthday on Monday, August 11th. Colm was born in Ballindrimly and went to school in Tarmon. He worked for Telecom for many years, spending many years in Castlebar before moving to Galway where he has been living for nearly 50 years. He never forgot his roots and has been a great Roscommon and Castlerea supporter all his life. He has been a great historian over the years and in 1982 he published his book of Roscommon sporting records which covers all sports in the county from 1871 to 1982. He has updated that and has kept the records from 1982 to the present year. He published the Castlerea St. Kevins and Termon Club history from 1884 to 2010 which includes football, hurling, handball and camogie, and schools football. And he has updated the records right up to 2024. What a man and we in the parish of Castlerea and county Roscommon are blessed to have such a man in our mist with such a memory. On Saturday, August 2nd, Colm with members of his family paid a visit to Hesters in Castlerea, where he met many old friends, including Eamon Campion, Dr. Greg and Claire Kelly, Brian Stenson and Danny Burke and they went back on the years gone by and how football should be played. Colm was in great form and at 96 you would not get one over on him. He was as sharp as ever and please God he will remain that way for many years to come. Here's wishing him health and happiness in the years ahead.

Congratulations to Castleplunkett’s Devan Curran, who representing Tulsk Community Games won a coveted silver medal at the national Community Games finals at the weekend. Competing in the Boys U-10 200m final, Devan took second on the podium, ahead of athletes from Galway and Monaghan. Capturing a medal at this level is an exceptional honour, not only for Devan but for the Tulsk club. Many sportsmen and women ‘cut their sporting teeth’ at these games, among them Sonia O’Sullivan, Niall Quinn and Denis Irwin. The entire community would like to once again congratulate Devan on his outstanding achievement.
