CASTLEREA MUSICAL SOCIETY PLANNING FOR 2027 

Castlerea Musical Society held a community meeting last week to look ahead and discuss how the society could continue to grow and thrive in the years to come. “We were delighted with the fantastic turnout and the many positive ideas and suggestions shared on the night. The committee was truly encouraged by the strong show of support from our community, and we’re excited to move forward with planning for 2027 and beyond. In the meantime, be sure to keep an eye on our social media channels and local press for news of upcoming events and gatherings — we have lots to look forward to together. A sincere thank you to everyone who attended and contributed. Here’s to the continued success of Castlerea Musical Society and the wonderful community behind it,” said a spokesperson.

COMMUNITY GAMES BASKETBALL TRIALS 

There will be U-13 boys’ basketball trials on Wednesday at the Hub at 3.45 p.m. Born after 1/8/2013.

BASKETBALL GAME 

The Castlerea senior men's basketball team play league leaders, Atlantic Eagles on Saturday night at the Hub at 7.00 p.m.

GOOD LUCK 

Good luck to Castlerea Community School senior boys’ basketball team in the All-Ireland final on Thursday. Best of luck also to past pupil and founder of Castlerea senior men's team, Michael O’Flanagan, in their all Ireland final. He is the coach of Galway Community College in the senior C boys final.

AGM OF ICA GUILD 

The AGM of Castlerea ICA Guild will be held in D’Gaff on Monday, March 2nd at 8 p.m.. Looking forward to seeing all members there on the night.

GOLF LOTTO 

The winning bonus ball number in Castlerea Golf Club’s lotto for February 18th was 42. Winners of this week’s lotto were John Caulfield, Tony Brophy, Tom and Tina, Bernie Ryan, Brendan Cox. Each receive €100.

COPING SKILLS PROGRAMME 

 Seeking Safety is a free coping skills programme for women affected by trauma, mental health, and/or addiction. Learn new ways to cope safely with your own triggers, impulses and symptoms and gain a more compassionate understanding of yourself and take back your power from the impacts of trauma. mental health and/or addiction. The programme is funded by the HSE and is being delivered in Castlerea and Boyle with a new group starting in Roscommon Town. Subscription renewal of €20 for the Cloonbonniffe 200 Club Draw is due. Promoters will be contacting members to collect subscriptions. Padraig is a granduncle of Roscommon goalkeeper Aaron Brady, and brother-in-law to the late Patsy Brennan, Boyle who worked in the Roscommon Herald for many years. Luke is very involved as the chairman of O’Loughlin Gaels Hurling Club in Kilkenny.

TRIEN 300 CLUB DRAW 

Trien 300 Club Draw is due for renewal, renewal, €20 for the year. Promoters will be contacting members in the coming days. Thanks to everyone for their ongoing support.

BAND HEADING TO USA 

The Castlerea Brass and Reed Band will travelling to the USA for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The group will depart on Thursday, Mach 12th and return on Wednesday, March 18th. They will be based at the Robert Trent Hotel in Newark and while there they will take part in a number of parades including the New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade. They will also attend the Roscommon Society’s dance in New York on Saturday, March 14th. On Sunday, March 15th long standing band member and present chairman of the band Mr Sean Mannion will be Grand Marshall at the Newark Parade. This is a great honour for Sean, his family and the band. Between band members and supporters a group of 32 will make the trip. In order to get new members for the band they have been running a school of music in the Hub, Castlerea on Mondays under musical director Niamh Flanagan, Martin Jones and Seamus Ward and after the first eight week course it has provided 4 new members for the band. The second course has just started in the Hub with 16 attending. Hopefully some more new members will emerge. The band has been in existence since 1890 except for a few blips along the way due to numbers. The band would like to thank Pat and Betty Garvey, and Frank and Helen O’Toole, Roscommon County Council, and Michael Creighton Aluminium Castlerea, for the sponsorship towards the band’s trip to the USA. The band would like to extend sympathy to all families who have suffered bereavements in the past number of months.

MS IRELAND AGM

 The AGM of the Roscommon branch of Multiple Sclerosis Ireland will take place on Tuesday, March 3rd in Durkin’s, The Square, Ballaghaderreen, starting at 7 p.m. with a Guest Speaker from MABS. Refreshments will be served on the night. All are welcome.

LEADER FUNDING FOR CEMETERY MAPPING PROJECT 

Kilcroan Cemetery Committee recently received LEADER grant aid, through Galway Rural Development (GRD), towards the digital mapping of the historic Kilcroan Cemetery. GRD has warmly praised the committee’s efforts to preserve the historical significance and the archaeological, architectural, and cultural heritage value of the cemetery.
