Voter turnout hit almost 80% in some areas across County Roscommon before the polls closed tonight at 10 p.m..

Polling stations in Tibohine and Granlahan recorded turnouts of 76% along with Rahara.

Ballinlough and Athleague booths also saw high turnouts at 70% and 69% respectively.

Castlerea had just under a 60% turnout while the figure in Ballaghaderreen was significantly lower at 41%.

In Roscommon, voter turnout reached just over 56%.

Turnout in the Galway part of the constituency was also relatively low, averaging just under 50%.

A nationwide exit poll tonight on the share of first preference votes has revealed Fine Gael and Sinn Féin are almost neck and neck on 21.1% and 21% respectively, with Fianna Fáil just narrowly behind on 19.5%.

The exit poll was conducted among 5,018 voters at more than 200 locations nationwide, as they left polling stations. It has a margin of error of 1.4%.

The poll was carried out as a joint project between the Irish Times, RTÉ, TG4 and the Department of Political Science at Trinity College Dublin.
