Local Notes: Charity truck run, farming conference and diocesan pilgrimage

As a result of a very successful Truck Run, which took place on Sunday, July 20th last in memory of the late Pat McCrann, sincere thanks are extended to both the McCrann family for their extreme kindness and the organising committee for their dedicated commitment towards this event. A total of €10,600 has been donated to the on-going Frenchpark Church Refurbishment Fund at the generous request of the McCrann family.

A Tractor & Truck Run will be held in memory of Kevin & Des Ryan on Sunday, August 17th next. Entry fees - tractors €25, trucks €25. Run commences at 4 p.m. The route will be from Ballinagare to Strokestown. There will be music afterwards from Conor O’Donnell and Stacey Breen in The Percy French Hotel, Strokestown starting at 8 p.m.. All proceeds to SOS Elphin and Croí.
The sudden death took place, at his home, of Mr Michael Creighton, Demesne, Frenchpark on Tuesday, July 22nd last. Predeceased by his grandparents, Kitty and Michael (Creighton) and Jim and Maura (Sampey), his uncle James and godmother Anna (Fahy), Michael (33) will sadly missed and remembered with love by his heartbroken parents, Noel & Imelda; brother, Barry, Barry’s fiancé Lorna, uncles, aunts, grandaunts, granduncle, cousins, extended family, neighbours and a wide circle of friends. His remains were removed from his home to St. Asicus’ Church, Frenchpark on Saturday, July 26th last. Following Requiem Mass, Michael was laid to rest in Tibohine New Cemetery.
The death occurred of Mr Michael Kennedy, Carrowkeel, Kingsland on Tuesday, July 22nd last. Brother of Fintan, Kenndy, Demesne, Frenchpark, the late Michael was predeceased by his father, Frank, and his mother, Annie in 2018. He is survived by his loving family, his sisters, Phil (Croghan), Kathleen (Rosslare), Ann (London), Assumpta (Ballaghaderreen), and Caroline (Loughlynn), brother Fintan extended family, relatives, neighbours and many friends. His remains were removed from Mahon’s Funeral Home, Boyle to St. Brigid’s Church, Breedogue on Friday evening last. Following Mass of the Resurrection, celebrated by Fr. Larry Ebuk, P.P., Ballinameen on Saturday, July 26th last, he was laid to rest to Killaraght Old Cemetery.
Mr Martin Joseph Flanagan, Arraghan, Ballinagare, Manchester and Inis Oírr, Aran Islands, passed away peacefully, on Friday, June 27th last at Salford Royal Hospital in Manchester. Predeceased by his father Thomas, mother Mary Kate and his sisters Marcella & Christina, he is deeply regretted by his loving wife, Nora Teresa; daughters, Ann Marie, Marcella and Bernadette; son, Thomas; grandchildren, sons-in-law, brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, cousins and a large circle of friends. Funeral Mass at Séipeal Naomh Muire, Aran Islands on Friday, July 25th last was followed afterwards by burial in Tempall Chaomhain.

Masses will be held in Tibohine at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (29th), Frenchpark at 7 p.m. on Thursday (31st), Ballinagare 7 p.m. on Friday (1st), in Tibohine Church at 11 a.m., Tibohine Cemetery at 7 p.m. and Ballinagare at 8.30 p.m. on Saturday (2nd) and in Frenchpark at 10 a.m. & Fairymount Old Cemetery at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday, August 3rd. Visits to the Sick & Housebound will take place in Fairymount & Tibohine on this Thursday (31st) and in Frenchpark & Ballinagare on Friday, August 1st.
Masses will take place in Tibohine New Cemetery on Saturday, August 2nd at 7 p.m.; Fairymount Old Cemetery on August 3rd at 11.30 a.m.; Kilcorkey Cemetery on Friday, August 8th at 7 p.m.; Tibohine Old Cemetery on Saturday, August 9th at 7 p.m. and in Fairymount New Cemetery on Sunday, August 10th at 11.30 am.

Tulsk’s intermediate footballers begin their championship campaign with a visit to Cootehall to take on St. Michael’s this Sunday, August 3rd in the first of three round robin encounters. Winners of the O’Gara Cup, they have lost only one game in all competitive encounters this season. The side’s second encounter is against St. Barry’s, the reigning junior champions at home on Saturday, August 16th at 6 p.m. before facing Creggs in their final group encounter on Saturday, August 30th at 6 p.m. in Knockcroghery. The best wishes of the entire community are extended to the entire squad and management team ahead of their campaign.
Congratulations to the organisers of last Saturday’s two lecture series of talks in the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre where there was a large attendance at both lectures. The talks marked the start of Lúnasa celebrations, the mythic God associated with the advance of Autumn or harvest.
Kellogg’s GAA Cul Camps are underway. This is the first time for the club to host the camp. A one-way system is in place for drop-off and collection of participants. All cars are advised to please enter the grounds via the main carpark, drop-off at the gate and exit via the Church Road entrance. Thanks are extended to all parents for their co-operation for what is hoped will be a successful camp.
Tulsk’s Hilltop Dairies sponsored boys U-9 team took part in a blitz on Saturday in St Croan’s where they played four games against Oran/St Croan’s, St Ciaran’s and John Mitchells who travelled from Birmingham. The team really enjoyed the experience and played magnificent in each of the games. Thanks to everyone involved in St Croan’s for the invitation to the blitz, along with the medal presentation and refreshments they provided. The boys were treated to ice cream afterwards as a reward for all their hard work over the last few weeks and really enjoyed the day.
This year’s Farming Rathcroghan Conference will take place on Friday, August 22nd in the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, Tulsk. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Food for Thought’ which will explore Irish food through history, archaeology, folklore, and tradition. Admission to this event is free but as there is limited capacity, booking is required. To reserve a place contact 086 1704113. Early booking is advisable for what is sure to be a most interesting and informative conference in keeping with previous events.
Tulsk History Society's recent survey of Baslick Cemetery has just been uploaded to its website. This is the fourth of the seven cemeteries in Tulsk parish to be completed. Photos and headstone inscriptions for Tulsk Abbey Cemetery, Kilcooley Cemetery, Ogulla Cemetery and now Baslick Cemetery are available.
Who shot Queen Medb? Is the title of a Storytelling Event with Mike McCarthy of Rathcroghan Visitor Centre entitled ‘Scéal na Tána agus Cruachán Aí’ or ‘The story of the Táin & Cruachán Aí.’ This event takes place in the Roscommon Arts Centre on Thursday, August 21st at 8 p.m. in conjunction with events marking national Heritage Week. The Elphin and Achonry Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock Shrine will take place on Sunday, August 17th. There will also be a family day on the date offering various activities for families with children of all ages. The dioceses extend a special invitation to altar servers in the parish to join the pilgrimage along with their families.
