Local Notes: Farm Safety Workshop, Poetry Festival, Summer Camps

Congratulations to Senan (100m) & Conan (200m) who won gold medals at the recent County Athletics Day in Ballyleague.

TOWN AND VILLAGE RENEWAL SCHEME 

Roscommon County Council is pleased to support the Elphin Development Group in progressing their successful application under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme 2025/2026, through which funding has been secured for Street Enhancement Works in Elphin. The Council will work in close partnership with the Elphin Development Group to deliver the project, which aims to enhance the visual appearance and overall character of the town. A key element of the initiative will include the development of a coordinated painting scheme. As part of this process, engagement will take place with local residents and property owners to ensure the scheme reflects the character of Elphin while encouraging broad community participation. Roscommon County Council and the Elphin Development Group look forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to successfully deliver this enhancement project for the benefit of the local community.

LATE JOE McELHONE 

The death has occurred of Joe McElhone, Grange, Hillstreet, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon on Wednesday 17th June 2026, peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, in the excellent care of the staff of the Mater Hospital Dublin. Predeceased by his brother Felix and his parents Shane and Vera. Joe will be sadly missed by his heartbroken family, wife Pauline, children Denise (Brian), Shane (Fiona), Ruth (Westin), Grace (Alan) and Paul (Mary), adored grandchildren Heather, Aifric, Ryan, Oscar, Matthew, Holly, Ava, Keeva, Max, Willow, Lily, Beau, Tadgh, JP, Jude and Ruby. He will be fondly remembered by his loving sister Miriam (Joe), and sisters-in-law Trudagh, Monica (Ger), Mary (Joseph), niece, nephews, cousins, extended family, and a wide circle of neighbours and loyal friends. Rest in Peace.

MANTUA GRAVEYARD 

Upkeep of Mantua Graveyard: A ollection will be taken up for the maintenance of Mantua Graveyard on Saturday 4th July at 7.30 p.m. Mass. All contributions gratefully received.

TUG OF WAR Sunday July 5th in Kiltrustan. Winners to receive the inaugural Timmy Beirne Cup. Form your team of 8. This year at Kiltrustan Sports Day we are bringing back the Tug of War Competition. We are honouring our Chairperson Timmy Beirne who sadly passed away before his time earlier this year. We are calling out to our community, sports teams, businesses and everyone further afield to get a team together to honour Timmy as he was known far and wide through his many friendship groups and connections. The tug of war will take place after all the running races are complete. Please help us make it a day out to truly remember.

ELPHIN TIDY TOWNS 

Meet up at Day Centre polytunnel every Saturday morning at 10.30 am. All welcome. Thanks also to everyone who sponsors the work of the group. We have been busy planting tomatoes, cucumbers, squash etc in the Day Centre polytunnel for the use of the clients and staff. Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers for coming out Saturday morning to clean up the town. Thanks to Cathal Murray for the soft drinks, much needed in that heat and after all the hard work. Thank you to June for co-ordinating the clean up and to Paul McDermott who collected and transported all the bags.

Elaina Carney from Elphin represented her family, her community, and her fabulous school St. Michaels, Castlerea and her province Connacht this weekend in the Ireland Special Olympic games in Dublin. Her events were walking race and softball throw. Elaina came 1st in the softball throw and 2nd in the 25m walk. Everyone is very proud of her achievements .

TOWER BAR SESSIONS 

The Traditional Irish music sessions are continuing each Tuesday night in the Tower Inn at 8.30 p.m. with a great mix of musicians and instruments which combines culture and heritage with an enjoyable nights entertainment, so whether you are a musician or listener come along to the Tower Inn and support this great event.

TOWER SINGERS SESSION 

The next Singers Night in the Tower Inn will be on Sunday 28th June. This is an event that will prove to be worth attending whether you are a Singer or Listener as all Genre of songs will be catered for. If you have not attended any of the Singers nights in the Tower Inn please come along to get a pleasant welcome and meet friends or make some new ones.

ELPHIN GAA ROUNDERS 

Huge congratulations to Elphin Ladies Rounders Team who beat St Clares of Cavan last week. Elphin ladies moved up to Intermediate level this year and have faced it with great effort and determination. The ladies' road to an All Ireland Semi Final looks bright.

CROGHAN/DRUMLION/CORTOBER 

FR. ALAN CONTINUES AS PARISH PRIEST 

In a recent letter to parishioners, Bishop Kevin Doran, confirmed that Fr. Alan Conway will continue in his role as Parish Priest of Croghan parish with additional responsibility for the parish of Ballinameen. Fr. John Mahony, who has recently been appointed Director of Accord Marriage Care in the dioceses of Elphin and Achonry, will be resident at the Parochial House in Ballinameen and will assist Fr. Alan in the pastoral care of the two parishes. Both Fr. Alan and Fr. John are wished every blessing in their work in the coming years.

CEMETERY CLEAN-UP 

A clean-up of Drumlion cemetery will take place every Wednesday evening during the month of June. Much support as possible required to keep cemetery maintained. All welcome.

SHANNON GAELS 50/50 DRAW 

Recent winner of the Shannon Gaels G.A.A. club's 50/50 draw was Deirdre O'Dowd, Emlagh, who won €750. All support for the draw is much appreciated. Tickets may be purchased on ClubSpot or at local businesses.

POETRY FESTIVAL 

 "Between the Lines" Poetry Festival will take place in St. George's Heritage Centre, Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday, June 27th from 9.30 a.m.. Hear from Rita Ann Higgins, one of Ireland's most celebrated poets. It will also feature "The History of Connaught in 5 Poems" and "The Poems we Keep", where Rhona Trench invites you to share a poem that shaped your life. SUMMER CAMP 

Shannon Gaels G.A.A. club Summer Camp will take place from June 29th to July 3rd, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m..
