Local Notes: Footpath Improvements, Sets Ceili, Mobile Library

Elphin Day Centre has a new meals on wheels van on the road. Thanks to Clar funding the centre now has two vans covering a greater area.

FUN RUN/WALK IN AID OF DOWN SYNDROME ROSCOMMON 

Elphin GAA healthy club is hosting a 5km/8km fun run/walk in aid of Down Syndrome Roscommon branch on this Saturday, March 14th at Orchard Park, Elphin at 1 p.m.. Registration from 12 noon. Admission €10, family €20. Refreshments afterwards. This is an annual family friendly event which always has a good turnout, whatever the weather. All abilities welcome. Prizes for each male and female in 8k and 5k events. Purple clothing optional.

LATE MR BARTHOLOMEW MURRAY 

The death occurred on February 26th peacefully in New York, in his 95th year , after a short illness, of Mr Bartholomew (Bert) Murray, Riverdale, Bronx, New York and formerly Shankill, Elphin. Predeceased by his son, Edmund, parents, Julia and Richard, brothers Charlie, Richard, Dermot and Eric and sister Marion. Much loved father of Siobhan. Bert will be very sadly missed and fondly remembered by his loving daughter, son-in-law, Bob, sisters, Rita and Hetty, brother-in-law, Jack, sister-in-law, Mary Teresa, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and his many friends at home here in Ireland, in America and also in England. Following Mass of the Resurrection on Saturday in St. Patrick’s Church, Elphin . Bert was laid to rest in the New Cemetery, Elphin, with his funeral cortège travelling from the church via his home place in Shankill and his holiday home at Goldsmith Drive, Elphin, enroute to his final resting place.

FOOTPATH IMPROVEMENTS 

Cllr Valerie Byrne has been advocating tirelessly for funding to carry out improvements to footpaths/roads in Elphin for a very, very long time. Elphin has been affected by the Active Travel projects progressed in towns and villages bypassed by the N5 road currently under construction. The town is also affected by these works principally in terms of construction traffic and in particular while the Shankill and Lugboy sections are under construction. Councillor Byrne has confirmed that footpath upgrade works will be carried out in Elphin in 2026. It is anticipated that the value of this work will be €100,000.

COUNTDOWN TO ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE 

Elphin's St. Patrick’s Day Parade, one of Connacht’s oldest, family friendly events will take place on March 17th starting at 5 p.m. with €1,200 in prizes - 1st, €500; 2nd, €250; 3rd, €100; 4th, €100; 5th, €50. This year's theme is international, cultural, traditional dance. Categories include best overall float, topical, creative, best school float, vintage, commercial/agricultural, cultural. Best dressed tractor, best dressed window, best dressed dog, €50. Most appropriately dressed child, crazy hairdo. Free face painting from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m..

TOWER BAR SESSIONS 

The Tuesday night traditional music sessions in The Tower Inn Elphin continue with a big welcome for all musicians and listeners. Last Tuesday a great night of music, song and chats was had. Thank you to everyone who came along. The Tower invites all musicians, singers and dancers to come along after the St. Patrick's Day Parade for a feast of traditional music. "The Full Irish" is a yearly event starting with a junior session from 6 p.m. and a senior session from 8 p.m.. Everyone is very welcome.

PAINT AND PROSECCO LADIES NIGHT

CLOONEYQUINN NS BAKE SALE 

The Parents Association of Clooneyquinn NS will host a bake sale on Sunday, March 15th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Tulsk Macra Hall. The group would appreciate donations of home-baked or shop-bought sweet treats. Donations can be dropped off to the hall from 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 15th. Thank you for your continued support.

SETS CEILI 

As part of Seachtain na Gaeilge Elphin Comhaltas will host a sets ceili with the current All-Ireland champions Ceili Bank Glor na dTonn in Elphin Community Centre on Saturday, March 14th at 9 p.m..

Elphin Community College past pupil Martha Nugent has been awarded a UCD Gaeltacht scholarship as part of the Teach na Gaeilge scheme at University College Dublin. The scholarship recognises fluent Irish speakers and includes a €1,500 award along with a unique Irish-speaking residential experience, celebrating students each year at the Gradaim Ghaeltacht UCD.

Abbeycartron NS needs your help to maintain its sensory garden and help with school excursions and is now undertaking a Read and Raise initiative. Students are going to read as much as they can in return for donations to help them along the way. Check out the sponsorship link on Abbeycartron NS Facebook page. WINDMILL WHEELERS 

Windmill Wheelers are undertaking a couch to 50 km or 25k in eight weeks programme starting in April. After the eight weeks cyclists will take part in the Windmill Classic on Sunday, June 7th. An information evening will be held on this Tuesday, March 10th at 8.15 p.m.. Full training and advice given by members. This is open to complete beginners and returning cyclists. Now is your chance to get fit and enjoy all the benefits of cycling.

MOBILE LIBRARY 

The mobile library visits Elphin every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3.30 p.m..
