Local Notes: Radio at the Windmill, Keep Fit Classes, Rosary

Councillor Valerie Byrne had been successful in getting a very generous gift of a new lawnmower and leaf blower from Wills Bros for Elphin Tidy Towns. Wills Bros also gave the group a supply of hi-vis vests with Elphin Tidy Towns on them. The lovely new equipment was sourced from Jim Gilligan, Machinery. Tidy Towns thanks the Wills Bros group for the generous donation.
Elphin Tdy Towns meets on Saturdays at 10.30 a.m. at the Day Centre polytunnel. All welcome, even if you can only come now and again for half hour, every little counts.
Members of the Shannon Basin Radio Club were in attendance at Elphin Windmill on Saturday, May 9th & Sunday, May 10th with a radio station to activate Elphin Windmill as part of the annual Mills on the Air celebration event with the purpose of promoting the historic standing of mills. Roscommon SPCA will be holding its annual church gate collection at St. Brigid's Church, Creeve on Saturday, May 23rd.
Keep fit classes with activator poles continue in Elphin Community Centre on Thursdays at 9 p.m.. Come along and get fit for summer. Feel good, stay active. A warm welcome promised.
The Windmill Classic takes place on Sunday, June 7th. The 105km starts at 9 a.m. and the 55km starts at 9.30 a.m. from Elphin Community Centre. Enquiries to 086 3530113.

A family fun day in memory of Rita Sharkey, Cavetown, who passed away on January 28th, 2025, will take place at The Four Provinces, Rathallen, on Sunday, May 24th, commencing at 4 p.m.. Rita was an active member of the local community and was involved in many parish and community events. The family fun day will include monster auction, barbecue, children's disco, Croghan Choir, book stall, cake sale, etc. Paula Sharkey, Cavetown is undertaking "Dip a Day for May" and donations can be made to the GoFund Me page. Proceeds will go towards a memorial at Cavetown Lake with a donation to Croí. Everyone welcome.
Croghan organic garden’s pop-up shop is open every Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. beside the Old Creamery Café. Fresh produce grown locally at the organic community gardens.
The death occurred on Monday, May 11th of Mrs Betty Murphy (née McDermott), Gortgallon, Ballyleague, Lanesboro and formerly of Croghan and Ballinameen. Predeceased by her parents, John and Frances and her father-in-law, James, Betty is survived by her husband, Joe; sisters, Una, Bernie, Angela and Catherine; brothers, Seamus, Anthony, Francis and Padraig; mother-in-law, Bridie; extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends. Following reposal at Smyth's Funeral Home, Roscommon on Wednesday, May 13th removal took place to St. Mary's Church, Lanesboro. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Thursday followed by interment in Cloontuskert Cemetery.
Congratulations to the children from Woodbrook National School who received their First Holy Communion in Drumlion Church on Saturday, May 9th. A word of thanks to the parents, teachers and Fr. Alan and all who contributed to the occasion.
A recent winner of the Shannon Gaels GAA Club's 50/50 draw was Grainne Burke who won €1,550. All support for the draw is much appreciated. Tickets may be purchased on ClubSpot or at local businesses.
