Local Notes: Tidy Towns Collection, Alone, Sincere Thanks

COUNTDOWN IS ON TO WIN A GARDEN ROOM AND KITCHEN DRAW 

The excitement is building for final few days of the fundraising draw, Win a Garden Room and Kitchen. The draw is raising funds to build Roscommon’s first athletics track, located at Lisnamult Sports Park, a community track for all. The development will cost in the region of €1.5 million. The draw will take place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 4th at 8 p.m. in Lisnamult, and will be broadcast live on the group’s Facebook page, Roscommon community Athletics Track. This state of the art facility will include a competition-standard 400m, eight-lane rubberised running track; full floodlighting for year-round use; a community playing field within the infield; integration with existing sports park facilities including pitches, meeting rooms, changing rooms, and changing places toilet. As phase 3 of the Roscommon Community Sports park Development this ambitious project builds on previous investment to create a central hub serving local athletics clubs, community sports groups, national and secondary schools, voluntary and disability support organisations active retirement groups, the wider public. TIDY TOWNS INITIATIVE IN FULL SWING 

With six weeks to go before judging for the National Tidy Towns competition, the members of Roscommon Tidy Towns are busy preparing for the judges' visit. The town is at Gold Medal status in the competition, and the members are aiming to improve and gain more points. Everyone can play a part by maintaining their own property. The members meet on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the car park opposite the Garda Station. New members are always welcome to assist with planting flowers, painting and litter picking. Think Tidy, Let’s Keep Roscommon Clean.

TIDY TOWNS COLLECTION 

The annual church gate collection in aid of Roscommon Tidy Towns will take place on May 2nd/3rd. All proceeds will go towards projects to enhance the town. Your support would be appreciated.

AGM OF RWN 

Roscommon Women’s Network CLG (RWN) open AGM will be held on Thursday, April 30th from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Riverside Centre, Athleague. DARKNESS INTO LIGHT 2026 

 There are just over few weeks to go to this year’s walk on May 9th, which is the 15th anniversary of Darkness into Light in Roscommon Town. On Saturday, May 9th at 4.15 a.m. communities from across Ireland and the world will come together to raise vital funds for Pieta's services. These vital services help people impacted by suicide and self-harm. They provide supports to those bereaved by suicide. Every step, every donation, every walk, and every community coming together makes a huge difference in the lives of so many. Register via www.darknessintolight.ie. Pieta depends on the funds generated by Darkness into Light, with over 85% of the charity’s annual income coming from public fundraising.

HE SWIMS – BEGINNER SWIM PROGRAMME 

 A collaboration between Roscommon Sports Partnership, Swim Ireland, and Roscommon Leisure Centre, He Swims is a six-week programme for men aged 18+ who are new to swimming or looking to build confidence in the water.  Register at Eventbrite.

ACTIVATOR POLES AT CASTLECOOTE COMMUNITY CENTRE 

 Keeping active is one of the best things you can do for your health helping to improve balance, mobility, strength, and overall wellbeing. A six-week activator poles programme at Castlecoote Community Centre offers a gentle, guided way to stay moving at your own pace. It starts May 6th at 10:15 a.m.. DIGITAL SKILLS 

 Drop-in digital skills sessions for adults in Roscommon Library every Tuesday from 1 – 3 p.m. with a GRETB tutor. Anyone who needs help with their phone, laptop or tablet is welcome to call in.

Apologies but due to circumstances beyond its control, Roscommon SPCA was unable to hold the annual church gate collection at Ballintubber and Ballinaheglish churches over the weekend of April 18th & 19th. A new collection date will be announced in the near future.
