Aoife McGettigan caught the 760-pound bluefin tuna while on a visit home in Killybegs from Australia

On August 11th last, up to 40,000 fish died in the River Blackwater and the River Clyda in the Mallow area.

Long time Co Cork angler, Dan Dennehy, described the fish kill as “devastating.”

They are found all parts of the Irish coast but only in sandy areas, usually in warm shallow waters in the hour before and after low tide.

An investigation is being conducted by IFI, the State agency responsible for the protection and conservation of freshwater fish and habitats, into the incident in which at least 5,000 fish have died
