€1.5m County Roscommon greenway gets planning go-ahead

A €1.5m greenway located on Bord Na Móna lands in east Roscommon has been given the planning go-ahead.
Roscommon County Council has granted permission for the greenway which will be located within the townlands of Meelick, Derrymoylin, Cuilbeg, Slattagh More, Dooslattagh, Caul and Cloonmore.
The development will comprise a shared cycle and walkway on Bord na Móna lands.
The plans include the repurposing of 5.375 metres of existing former rail bed, 540 metres along existing bog headlands/former high fields, and 2085m along pre-existing machine access routes; the construction of car and/or bicycle parking facilities at a number of gateway locations along the proposed route, and the provision of EV Charging spaces at the gateway locations.
The greenway route will provide thematic experiences consisting of an acoustic mirror feature at a former narrow gauge rail line underpass and an acoustic sponge feature at a former narrow gauge rail line underpass.
The development will include upgrade works to three agricultural crossings; the decommissioning of the former narrow gauge rail line level crossing and the provision of upgrade works at the local access road crossing.
The proposals will also involve the erection of wayfinding and interpretative signage at gateway locations along the route.
